Hello, my boyfriend of 6 yrs is in the Army National Guard and has just received orders in OKlahoma. Anyway, we cannot move until we both finish college next spring (we will both have BA's). Because he is only part time in the Army, we have more options about where to live as he can work in Tulsa or OKC.

We are from Connecticut, where bugs are small and seasons are long and drastic, and everything is within driving distance. We like it here, but winters are too cold and houses too expensive. We are exicited to move to OK but can't seem to find the right place.

We are looking for a green place to live, with some seasons and small bugs (the bug part is mostly my concern!). We would prefer a smaller town (less than a 20,000 pop, more than 8,000), with not a lot of crime as we want to start a family ( schools are important too). I am also looking for a place where I will have support of other military wives/girlfriends, as my boyfriend will most likely be deployed at some point.

We fell in love with some homes in Claremore, but the crime rates were very high. I have heard wonderful things about Mustang and Norman, and Edmond... but we'd like a bit more land than homes in those areas usually offer (at least 1 acre). We have also found nice homes in Tuttle. Energy efficient homes are important to me, but we are open to older homes as well. Our price range would be 150k-300k.

So I guess my question comes down to this... where is a green, low crime, low populated, all american place to raise a family in OK that is within driving distance of the city? Would we be better off looking in the OKC area or Tulsa area?

I appreciate any and all advice, opinions, and personal stories! We have never even visited OK so we are completely in the dark.

Thank You!!!!
I think you ought to come visit, and try to check out some of the cities you've mentioned, before, you make the big move. You want to be comfortable where ever you end up. There is no one, all American city, in Oklahoma. It depends on your taste and things you consider important.

Again thank you all. As I look at the two cities, I agree that Tulsa sounds more like the area for us. I think what will have to be the deciding factor is where we get jobs. I will have a MA in education, and my boyfriend will have a BA in business (minor in criminology, he wants to be a police officer), I am hoping that our fields will allow us to be rather flexible in terms of where we live. We are planning on renting for a little while before buying... where are good, safe, areas to rent around both Tulsa and OKC? We are open for historic communities and realize that we will not have acreage as we rent. I've heard that renting homes is actually a financially better choice, thoughts?

Again, thank you all so much, everything you are mentioning is extremely helpful!

I would think that mid-town Tulsa would be a great area for you. Lots of trees, historic, and generally an all around great area.

I am retired Air Force living in Arkansas. I am considering a move to McAlester OK for a job opportunity. Any info about the area would be greatly appreciated. I like to hunt, fish and ride motorycles. Are there opportunities for these pleasures! What is the housing market like? Is there DSL wireless, satellite TV? Who are the providers? What is McAlester like?So many questions, so little time!
Any help is greatly appreciated. THANKS.......

I just wanted to throw in that I think you can get on the sex offender list for some stupid stuff like peeing in public. Maybe it's a myth but I've heard that before.

There are also boys who were caught having sex with their girlfriend who is under age. In some cases, they were only months apart in age. Stupid!

I have a friend who let himself get picked up by a girl in a bar - he figured since she was being served there, it was okay. Wrong - she'd borrowed her cousin's ID, and not only was she not old enough to drink, she was underage, period. Once he got out of jail [don't know what happened to the bar owner who'd accepted her ID], he said he'd never again so much as talk to anyone who looked like they were under 35 without checking their ID himself. He was a nice guy, and certainly didn't deserve being used by a silly little twit who wanted to get even with her BF for flirting with another girl.

It's not a myth. Just a week or so ago I read about a girl who decided to pee in the brush behind someone's house rather than walk all the way back to wherever she came from and got charged with public nudity and something else, too. Now she has to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life... hope she wasn't majoring in education or something along those lines.

Stupid, stupid. They're shooting themselves in the foot with these ridiculous laws. Eventually everyone is going to start ignoring the sex offenders registry because it's loaded with stuff like this. Each case should be reviewed and decided on a case by case basis. It's like the "no tolerance" laws in school where 1st and 2nd graders get suspended for using a stick on the playground as a gun.
