They were commonplace in western Oklahoma if you lived out in the country and were poor. Everyone we knew in Kiowa and Caddo County had a swamp cooler back in the day.

That is why we had one in California. It added about fifty dollars to the bill. The AC added about 300.

Actually I have one. Its a portable type and is perfect for sucking up cat hair from the air. I am going to try it in the kitchen near the gnats which seem to have found a home (ugh...) Maybe it will suck them up too!

See, got it back to bugs lol

Last night I went to pick up some dirt that I missed on the bedroom floor when I vacuumed. Both of them moved. I looked closer; two wolf spiders. Not big ones though. I told my husband about them, and he said, "Do they bite?" I replied, "I don't know." That was the end of that. They are still roaming around somewhere.

I went to Delano, CA to visit my husband's aunt. That was near Bakersfield in the valley, and it used to be so dry. It is humid now, and I really liked it; just like I like it here most days. I grew up in Paso Robles where the humidity was maybe 10 in the summer with 100 to 105 temps. I really liked it there because I could work outside all day. Here I just wrap a wet towel around my neck and continue to work.

I love swamp coolers. I would prefer having one here because the air conditioner is so dry. But I suppose they would cause mildew, which we do not need. We don't turn on the air until it is almost bed time, and when it really gets hot we wait until 5 or so. A swamp cooler is cheaper. Gee, can we use them here? in the humidity?

Bakersfield is still the Mojave Desert.
Swamp coolers are for dry heat. With humidity they would only blow hot air(like some people I've known)

This is the first year we have had gnats. They seem to be coming from the bathroom shower drain. We poured apple cider vinegar down the drain, and they went away for a day or so. Repeat process and so on.

Now they are back. And no we don't leave food out. Suggestions?

I had some visiting ladybugs last night...

About the gnats, maybe there's some mold in the shower drain. Try straight white vinegar, or some stronger anti-mold shower cleaner. As for the ants inside, I kept pouring boiling water on them until they finally seemed to give up. There are still a lot outside, though. I do have food out, sort of, I keep the dog food inside in a big plastic tote. I know from past experience in WA that they can get in those, but I haven't seen any near it here.

it does sound like you have mold in your drain and vinegar isn't strong enough. My idea Redbird is to tear open the wall and get to the drain, unhook it and clean it before replacing it. Don't like that idea?

Dang, girl! You are a gnat terminator! How much do you charge to tear down and annihilate our gnats?

I will be in Shawnee tomorrow, so it sounds like a trip to Lowe's is in order. And I am taking the pineapple plant out doors. Yes, I said a pineapple plant. Ever grow one? Don loves plants. We have all kinds. And apparently fungus gnats also love house plants!

Fungus Gnats, HYG-2114-95

I think too with all the rain we have been having, there is a lot of damp earth around the house that just hasn't dried out yet. I was out chopping weeds today, and the back of the house on the shady side was knee deep in leaf-litter and moist as all get out.

Come on summer heat!

Back to bugs, I just heard the first locusts today! I love the sound of locusts!

I saw my first fireflies last night. They may have been out for a while though. Maybe not, because I look out my bedroom window every night, and all the sudden I thought someone with a flashlight was next door in the empty acreage. fireflies.

The big horse flies? We have those too. I will spray you down with horse spray. Our two neighbors combined have about 20 horses. Five on one side are starving and the other neighbor has 15 horses on a high dollar scale. They are cowboys and train cow horses.

For the gnats, I plugged the shower and sink drain and have been using a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol to get them gnats drunk.

$400 dollars? You must be a plumber! Our plumber is a fat old hairy man and flashes the cliche plumbers crack. Eww. No joke.
