allegations of extreme animal cruelty in Rowland Oklahoma
I am an animal lover...especially dogs and I have been hearing stories about this guy for some time now and I am amazed that the DA is not investigating the allegations against the cities animal control officer.
Based on the allegations, he supposedly was using dogs for target practice, drowning animals, shooting the dogs in the head, and, although the state of Oklahoma has specific laws for how Euthanasia of animals is supposed to have taken place was, based on allegations, violating state law by giving a painful poison without any type of pain killer.
Does anyone here know anything about this.

NO, never heard anything about it. BUT I didn't even have the heart to read the article after your description. I'm also an animal lover and I'd recommend that you call the nearest Humane Society and ask them to investigate. If this is happening, they can hopefully save the animals and prosecute this jerk. The penalties aren't nearly what they should be and are merely a slap on the wrist, but hopefully that will change in time.

Please DO read the article!!

The Roland Town Council unanimously accepted the resignation of a longtime town employee during their regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening.

Wilson asked that each council member visit the facility and to look into state statues and be prepared to bring ideas and input to the table during next months meeting. “No matter what when we get things lined out and when we do we’ll start from day one. Any animal out there will be treated as if it’s their first day that way we know how long they’ve been there and what the next steps will be.”
|
Roland is a very small town, and from the article it looks like they are taking the right steps to rectify the situation.
From a personal standpoint I can honestly say that the Laws and Statutes here in our town are MUCH stricter regarding pets than the town we moved from in CA!

The Oklahoma statutes are good. It would seem, based on the allegations, that the animal control officer was not following them. I have done more research since I posted the article, apparently PETA filed a complaint against him in 2008. The DA did not prosecute because he said that the Oklahoma law as it applies to Roland was ambiguous and did not prosecute. Jammie if you did not read the last article the next article is a little more detailed regarding the allegations against Mr. Cole. You may not want to read.

How horrible!!! SO, I did get up the nerve to read both articles. Won't sleep well tonight.
I agree Blues, that it has to be stopped and I'm glad to hear that your town has MUCH better laws regarding this, Robyn.
SO, suggestions? They do have a phone number for PetRescue, but since we have no firsthand info, wouldn't it still be wise to give them a call and offer our support to them? We could let them know how horrified we are that this has gone on. Maybe notify PETA again and get them involved? They tend to be a bit radical though and that could make people in that town dig their heels in deeper since it's obvious that they supported him even though there have been complaints for quite some time now. At least the jerk doesn't work there anymore, BUT he should pay for his crimes. The euthanizations under those conditions was uncalled for.
So, if all we can do is offer moral support, contact PetRescue??? Where is the nearest Humane Society?

At the moment, everything in the articles are all allegations. This man has not been convicted of anything. I think PETA would probably make things worse. I know the people in that part of Oklahoma and they would dig their hills in a little. It appears that the DA is not investigating or filing charges for whatever reason. I don't know what you do in Oklahoma when the DA refuses to prosecute; however if the law really is ambiguous then the Attorney General of the state could step in.
As far as the animals are concerned, I will see if I can get some phone numbers and get back to you. I am very sorry the articles made you feel bad. I did put the disclaimer up. I would not be surprised if this made national news.

Yea, people digging their heels in is what I was afraid of. I'm still wondering if the Humane Soc. couldn't get them to move a little. AND making national news on this would be a GOOD thing even though the locals may not feel that way. They may just be allegations, but people don't usually make accusations that are quite so specific if there's no truth involved.
I'll follow this thread and if you come up with a phone number or a suggestion, I'm in.

This might actually do better in the pets/dogs forum. National news is one thing, national news involving PETA is another thing entirely. Anything PETA gets involved it eventually turns into a circus that does nothing for the animals in question.

I, as an animal lover, understand yalls outrage. However, if the guy doesn't work there and no one can prove anything, there's not anything you can do (legally). I mean, you could go stand in his yard with signs or light his house on fire but I don't see how that's going to benefit an animal.
