I would go by the top ten counties for number of tornado occurances in Oklahoma to guide you in worrying about tornadoes in Oklahoma. Thank God, my county isn't on the list, but Oklahoma County sure is.

The probability/frequency ? ... Let's just say that they are fairly common in this entire area...particularly in the Spring. Pawhuska is in the area known as "Tornado Alley". In fact, tornadoes are considerably more frequent in the northeastern and central part of the state, than they are in the western part... And you can pretty much expect at least a few to be bouncing around the area every year...and as I said, particularly at this time of the year... In fact, they have caused considerable damage in this general area in just the last couple of weeks, and one passed just a few miles west and north of Pawhuska just last week, but all we got in town was wind, rain, and marble-sized hail... But, I would not let that be a deciding factor in my decision on whether or not to live here. There is nothing a person can do about them except take cover when the sirens sound...or do what most of the area's "old timers" do...just go on about your business, and keep your eyes and ears open........... You may find this of interest... Pawhuska is the capitol of, and located in, Osage County...

I'll be honest and tell you that I really don't know much about that. I'm sure there are some out there, but I have just never really paid much attention. I know that several months back there were a few out around Wynona, a very small, but pleasant town of about 450 people, 10 miles south of Pawhuska.... Jobs, on the other hand, are rather scarce right now... Pawhuska's main source of employment, besides the various "government jobs", such as the city, county, state, and with the Osage Indian Agency, had always been oil...and the oil industry here right now is at an all time low. There are jobs here, but a person has to look for them. (Thankfully, I am retired now.)....... However, we are only about 25 miles from Bartlesville, a larger city of about 40 or 50 thousand, and jobs are much easier to find there. A number of people from here commute to Bartlesville to work...and I know several people who commute to Ponca City, 40 miles to the west, or even Tulsa, about 60 miles to the northeast...... I may be biased, but to me Pawhuska a very pleasant community, little crime, friendly people, and with a good school system, which is an important consideration if you have children....... I do wish you and your family the best with it...and Welcome to the Osage.
I too, am very much interested in Pawhuska but discouraged by the apparent lack of jobs. In reference to the statement highlighted above, "There are jobs here, but a person has to look for them.", what are the best sources of information about jobs? Would the local newspaper or internet be the best places to look or is it pretty much all word-of-mouth?

Thanks, StillwaterTownie.

I think that's a really good place to start. Job bloggers and career search professionals are talking a lot nowadays about "the hidden job market", so I'm trying to cover all the bases.

Thanks mongojoe, that site is very helpful especially since my family is very paranoid (aw hell, me too) about tornados. Adair looks good to us especially Stilwell.

Bartlesville may well be a good place to start looking for employment. I have never been there myself... However, whenever I personally was out of, and looking for, a job, I just went to every place I would consider working in the area, and put in applications... I will admit that a time or two I had to take jobs I did not particularly care for, and hold them until something I wanted appeared. With a family and responsibilities, I pretty much had to.............. As for Adair...I honestly can't say, but if I recall, it is a very small town with less than a thousand people.... Now, it has been probably close to 30 years since I have been to Stilwell, but back then it was slightly smaller than Pawhuska, and I believe it still is......................... In fact... Here... If you are looking at populations of towns and cities in Oklahoma to help make your decision, then perhaps this will be of some help to you......
