Looking for a fun, easy & pretty day hike w/in 4hrs of Stillwater?!?!
Hey there!!
My fiance & I need a day trip in the worst possible way! We moved here about 4 years ago, things are going good now but we had a really, really rocky start. Anyhow, we've been doing a lot of feeling sorry for ourselves & missing our old home & it's over you know, time to move on, time to start enjoying life again!
One thing we really enjoyed & now miss about CA is hiking. Nothing serious, just a nice casual day hike along a river or somewhere nice & beautiful, and I think if we could find something like that here our feelings would start to turn around. Small steps, right?
I think that Turner Falls, OK & Eureka Springs, AR look really great but I'm looking for something a little closer, I don't mind driving about 3 hours but there could be better places closer that I don't know about & that's where you guys come in 
We live in Stillwater OK, so again something in any direction w/in about 3 hours would be perfect. If it's not too hot we would love to camp, but for now I guess we're looking for day trips.
We both love to take photos, walk around, eat a good lunch, be near water, trees & lots of greenery...etc...
Thanks for reading all my rambling  any tips &/or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Start at home. If you haven't already, try walking around Boomer Lake in Stillwater. Include walking by the spillway, if it has rained heavily recently. But it won't take all day. Otherwise, there's probably some hiking to do around Keystone Lake near Tulsa.

Turkey Mountain looks awesome, thank you for sharing the pictures!!! That sounds like a perfect day trip to me, off to do a little googling on it thanks again!
Also, what area is most mountain-e (sorry, I know there has to be a better word than mountain-e, lol), but looks the most like Oregon or Northern CA? Even if we have to drive towards AR or MO, we're up to a little site seeing! |

Down here in the southeast part of the state we have the Quachita mountains. It's beautiful and I'm sure there is a lot of hiking that can be done around there. It's going to be a bit farther than the 4 hours you'd like but it'll be worth it Here's a website that'll tell you more. Talimena Scenic Drive in Oklahoma and Arkansas |

Yeah, the Ouachita Mountains are DEFINITELY worth the trip. It's the most beautiful area of the entire state, IMO.
They have true mountains and not hills. Not the Rocky Mountains by far, but they are very beautiful and full of adventure.
There are several hundred black bear their though so watch out.  |

The rocky Wichita Mountains by Lawton would be better than the Turner Falls area. You can hike up the highest mountain, Mt. Scott, or instead, drive to the top as I have done before. And probably no bears. The drive from Lawton west to Altus is quite scenic for Oklahoma and quite noticably different from the Stillwater area, what with mesquite dominating the foreground and rocky hills rising up in the background.

Also look at the trails and areas around the Illinois River and Spavinaw Lake. Saline Creek east of Salina about 7 miles has a cold water swimming hole called "Blue Hole" where you can picnic for $5 a day or camp for $10 overnight (per car). On these hundred degree days, a swimming hole where you actually turn blue from the cold water is really nice. Over east of there a couple of hours in Arkansas is War Eagle and a bit further is the buffalo river. Both great places to kayak and canoe and camp and hike. Illinois River by Tahlequah has several canoe rental places, or you can take your own canoe or kayak to make a day of it. Illinois River does not allow glass containers and you can and will get busted for littering......but that is a good thing, imo.
