I do have the radio, I just haven't figured it out yet. I should probably get on that. And I'll have to remember to check the local station's sites next time.
The only thing that scared me about it was that I didn't know it was coming, so if it had been worse... I don't know what the tornado sirens sound like, but there were lots of sirens starting about 15-20 mins after the storm got to the area, and they lasted quite a while so I don't know if I would've heard the weather sirens over them?
Did you get a TV yet? Here's our routine. We have our weather radio set so it only goes off when there are severe weather warnings in Canadian County (where Mustang is). Then when it goes off, we put the TV on (we like Gary England), and he will tell you where the tornadoes (if there are any) are, and when to seek shelter.
Even though a lot of tornadoes occur at night, the public buildings that are used as shelters will open. I know the elementary school down the street from us opens when there is severe weather. If a tornado is spotted in your town, the sirens will go off. Most towns have a "test" of the sirens (Mustang does it at 12:00 noon on Saturday), so you can hear what it sounds like.
I would suggest you find the closest designated shelter to your house and confirm with them that they open when severe weather is present. At work they will have a routine established for employees and the same thing at school. If you're driving, the advice is to seek shelter, and if you're unable to do that, leave your vehicle and lie down in the nearest ditch (I can't EVER imagine doing this myself -- but that's the prevailing advice).
If you can't get to shelter and you're home, go into the bathtub and put pillows or your mattress over your head.
Of all the people I work with none have never seen a tornado up close and personal, so I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it. Just spend the time being prepared.
The tornado siren doesn't really sound like a vehicle siren. It's really loud. BUT I don't recommend anyone depending on the sirens. Get a tv pronto little missy! You don't have to get cable, probably. I used to be able to rig up homeade rabbit ears out of a coat hanger and foil good enough to get chan. 9. Make Gary England your best friend.

And like you said, DISH or DirecTV will stop working during severe rainfalls. At least, ours does.
MK, sorry to hear about that wreck your mom was in, hope she was okay.
There were no severe injuries to my mother except that she cut her nose on the horn and she was pregnant with one of my little sisters, who was born deaf because of the accident.
Now the VW was demolished. Both were killed. The passenger door on the VW flew open, the women feel over toward the door, the door flew back shut and worked as a guillotine. I'm sure you get the picture.

They sound like "Air Raid" sirens.
One is about to go off here in Duncan in about 5 minutes.

No I don't have a TV yet. I'll have to wait til next week to buy one. :\ When I called the apartment office the guy said to go to OCCC. I guess I'll have to confirm that with them and ask how they do things, because I wouldn't know where on campus to go. If I see one while I'm driving, I won't have to worry about getting in a ditch because I'll already have died from a heart attack.

I have basic cable, channels 2 through I think 23 or 24. I just don't have the TV yet.
As a rule, when the *danger* has passed they will sound one loooooong tone.
After you have made it through a couple of storm seasons we will teach you about the "Gary England Drinking Game"
I think I read about the game in one of the tornado threads a while back, though I don't remember the specifics. lol
I'd seen a video somewhere that had sirens that sounded like that but also talked. Maybe someone posted a link to it on here, I can't remember, but it was pretty creepy.
Here is a nice video of Colleeng's first week here when severe weather hit. See how fast Colleeng can run when she wants to? Colleeng got so freaked out, she kept calling her kids Loren or something like that! She could not even remember their names.
REMEMBER!!!! Listent to Gary England, OR YOUR CHILDREN WILL DIE!!!
