Coming to Fort Sill in Oct
My husband just got orders for Fort Sill a couple days ago and they didn't give us much time to prepare. The wait list for on-post housing is 24 to 36 months according to the lady at the housing authority I spoke with....by then they will probably be sending us somewhere else! I have been looking for rental properties in the area north of post (Elgin and so forth) as we would like to stay within that area. Does anyone know of someone with a house for rent, less that 1000.000 per month that allows pets? We are looking for something with 3 or 4 bedrooms, 2 bath, and a garage becuase we will be having a friend share rent because we both own homes in the Fort Campbell, KY area and don't want to sell. We have already lined up a renter for our home and are anxious to find something in a nice small neighborhood or rural area. They haven't given us much time to find a place but I also am not desperate yet and won't take just anything. We have references and are ready to secure a place ASAP with an October move in (hubby has to report on Oct 10). I have looked online and spoke with a couple realtors who have tons to offer in the downtown Lawton area but that just doesn't look to me like it will be the safest place for children.

oklahoma
Im not sure if you have ever been to oklahoma. i am from Tulsa. i will be moving to lawton before christmas. lawton can be nasty, so please remember that it is just 1 town in oklahoma. i highly recomend visiting other parts of the state. (Oklahoma City (bricktown and Edmond), as well as tulsa (broken arrow and bixby. ) the drive from elgin combined with the time it takes to get on post can be a bad thing - and he most likley wont get to shower after PT in the mornings, because there wont be enough time to drive. you should be able to find something close to post without a realator.. the town is small you shouldnt need one as long as you drive around town and just look. there is a reason realators have tons to offer in downtown lawton - check the crime rate. it is not a safe place for kids. lawton is known for its "gangs" and its homeless people in oklahoma. they are not big time gangs but still a threat. a few months ago some people had a fight and a six year old boy asleep on the couch in his living room was shot and killed in a drive by shooting. the gang members got the wrong house. so i would worry less about how good of a deal you get on rent and more about the part of town you are in. if you can afford it, you want to be out by the new walmart. just ask some one or google it bc i dont know how to tell you which side of town it is on . just remember new walmart is good - by the mall is bad. :0 hope this helps

We got stationed here in May 2008. I love it here, my husband has been in the Army 16 years and we have lived all over the world. We purchased our first home here back in January. We live in Lawton on the south east side and it is so safe and quiet here, I couldnt ask for a better neighborhood. However there are bad areas of Lawton they are on the west side of town, I would never live there. The difference Between the west side of lawton and the east side is amazing. The east side is more out in the "country" we have one small grocery store here on the east side and no other stores so no one has a reason to be out here unless you live in the area. Lawton isnt a bad place as long as you know where to go. As with any town, none are perfect. But if you want to live in lawton, then make sure you live on the East side, either the north east or south east. As for what the above poster said the little boy was killed lived on the south west side. And as for living by the "new" wal mart its still on the west side. The rent is cheap on the south and north west side because some of the areas, not all arent the best. Like I said you want to live on the east side. Rent can run anywhere from 800 -1,500 a month on the east side.

Thank you both for the replies and helpful advice Its much apreciated. I couldnt find a listing anywhere for a "new" walmart so the location wasnt much help lol No, I have never been there and my husband is in Louisiana for training so the concept of us going to OK and finidng a house was out. I had to do it all online and tons of phone calls! I finally resorted to using a realtor which I didnt want to do but we found a very nice house and are going through the process of buying it. Its in Rush Springs and a little further than we wanted to be, but we couldnt pass up saving over 300 a month on rent and being able to do with the house what we want....and its a great house for the kids with tons of room and a huge yard. We should know in a couple weeks when closing is, for sure, and be headed to OK on that day

We werent comfortable taking a gamble on finding something closer to Lawton so Rush Springs had everything we wanted without the problems we ran in to house hunting around post. The drive is about 30 minutes from where we will be so it isnt to bad...not any further than the 40 minute drive we have from our TN home to Fort Campbell and I will gladly spend the gas money to know my family will be safe. My son was especially excited to hear the school is smaller than the one he goes to here and only 40 4th graders lol I wont be going on post unless I have to so as long as my husband doesnt mind the drive its the right choice for us We are also planning to still look around once we get there for some rural property with acreage so the kids and hubby can go hunting and ride the dirt bikes and 4 wheelers, I didnt see much of that around the other places we were house hunting.
Does anyone know anything about Rush Springs? Such as internet and television choices? We have satellite internet now so if we have to keep it, no big deal...but I would like to know what is available for future reference.
