QUOTE=91marquis;786345]Duncan is a nice place. I lived there in 91 and 92, worked for the EMS. I live in Tulsa now. It has a nostalgic feel, the primary radio station played 50's and 60's music. The cost of living was very reasonable. The Duncan Police are always on-the-job, sometimes their tactics are a little questionable but there isn't much crime either.

Goodners Steak house made a very good ribeye that didn't put a dent in the wallet, buffet style fixins.

The bean salad was excellent. I rented a very clean two-bedroom for what was reasonable at the time. If I recall there are two power companies for electricity. Three lakes that can be reached in 20 minutes. OKC is about an hour away, Lawton is closer. There's the worlds largest garage sale every August. Oh yeah, and the women are very friendly. Hope this helps.

Yes, "Gooners" aka: "The Big G" on the corner of Elk, and hwy81, I`ve past it many time on my way to work in Marlow.
I`ve been in Duncan now since 6/13/07 and have noticed a few other Steak Houses, another out by Halliburton on Bois D' Arc (what a name), I still can`t pronounce it.
One thing that I found out is, if your from California, it will be(how would you say it?) let's just say "unusual" to be greeted by every person you pass and waved to by people that don't even know you, but that's the way people are in Oklahoma. The ones in Ca, are hard nosed and stuck up.
For those who are use to the Big City atmosphere or expect to find it here, your best bet is to stay out, and for this reason, OK, including (but not limited to) Duncan is "Country all of the way. I've made service calls outside of Duncan to smaller towns such as Bray and Velma, these towns are mostly rural farming towns with a population of less than 600. The town of Bray consists of 1 convenient store.
I just feel that the people of Oklahoma do not cotton to those who perfer living off of welfare instead of working.

Had to LOL at that one! I had the same problem when we first arrived... 2 years of French in high school caused me to sound REAL stupid when I tried to say it. Have to admit, people were quite kind when correcting me, and they didn't laugh TOO hard... Try not to look at the spelling, the pronunciation is simple. Bow (long O sound) Dark.
And don't get me started on what happened when we drove through Thoreau, NM.
jessaka, I was born and lived most of my life in Central CA. When I was younger, there was never a day you couldn't look to the east and see the Sierra Nevadas in all their Glory... by the time we left 40+ years later, they had become a rare sight even though we had moved much closer to them.
Driving in and out of Cali was bad enough, but the last two times we had occasion to Fly brought tears to my eyes! Nothing but a brown haze obscuring what USED to be a lovely green checkerboard of agricultural land.
We came back to SW OK in 1994 and the minute we stepped out of the car, I felt like I was home... for the first time in my life. I cried most of the way back and SWORE to my husband that someday I WOULD move back *Home* for good! (Thankfully he came with me! )

Lady,
It is a shame what CA has become. I just hope that OK can prevent this from happening, but they are building new homes here and taking away more land. Just not as fast as CA. I saw my home town of Paso Robles go from having farm land east of the Salinas River to having all homes, all the way out to Creston, CA where I moved when I returned there in 1987. Now even the farm house that I lived in with 160 acres is all homes.
Oklahoma is a place that I have dreamed of living in since age 16 when I came out to see Missouri. All of this area is about the same. meaning east Ok, west Missouri and east Arkansas. How sad I was to see freeway in Arkansas on the way to Eureka Springs two weeks ago.
Now I am curious to what happened when you drove through Thoreau, NM.

Thank You, that prevents me from saying it in a crowd and really sounding stupid, "lol"
About the arial view of California. The first time that I flew back to So, Cailfornia from Ohio it was like once you cross from Arizona over into the Mojave Dessert everything turns into a dirty brown. I lived at the foothills of the San Bernardino Mnts and not only was the smog discusting but almost all growth turned brown before the middle of summer. Unlike back here where everything keeps it's true color until the change of season comes.
Even worse after large wild fires.

Oh! (I should have finished my thought. ) Thoureau is like Bois D'arc and Miami ( Miamuh) here in OK. I thought it might have been named after Henry David Thoreau and made the mistake of voicing that question to the hubby... (he still teases me about it) NM residents pronounce it as "Threw" or "Through"... Of course I didn't believe him until we stopped and talked to some locals.

And there actually IS a change of seasons! No more "Well the Tule Fog has rolled in... Summer must be over." With the reverse happening when summertime rolled around. Always seemed like Fall lasted about one weekend and disappeared.

Okiebound, Where does your mother-in-law live? My Mom and grandparents were from Ryan. Just curious!

howdy
hey folks,
i ran across this thread while looking for maps.........go figure.
anyway i've grown up in this area (marlow/duncan) my whole life and will probably be buried here. it's funny to read what you people write about how great a place this is. i guess i take it for granted since i see it everyday. i have traveled some through the u.s., and for sure there are a lot of worse places to live. when i was a kid, my dad had a lot of family who moved to california to 'live the dream', and i always thought that was the place to be. maybe it was years ago, but like some of you have pointed out, it's a much different place now. funny too, most all of his family moved back here when they retired. they sold their houses for a big fat profit and found houses back here for a tenth of the price, and pocketed the rest. i guess it's really not so bad here after all, and i do believe it's a good place to raise kids and retire and so forth, when compared to some other places. i just got back from a business trip to newport beach (ca) and for as pretty as it was, i wouldn't trade my acreage and starry nights and peace and quiet for any of it.
to the lady from germany.............there is actually a large german influence in lawton due to the army base, so you might be able to find some kind of connection there and it's only 30 minutes or so away.

Hi Kento 58, and welcome! Quite a few people are moving back to OK from California and other states. Duncan is one of the nicest small cities around.
