I posted this in another thread:

"Yes, Oklahoma has tornadoes, but California has earthquakes and Florida has hurricanes. The threats there but you have to realize that tornadoes cover a very small area compared to the entire state. The chance of any certain location being hit by a tornado is very minimal. When a tornado does happen, Oklahomans take it very seriously. TV breaks in, sirens go off, ect. Tornado formation is still not completely understood but compared to the past meteorologists have an incredible grasp on catching a coming tornado. Also, the most obvious storms containing tornadoes are also going to be the most violent ones. Any weatherman could take a look at the May 3rd, 99 radar and tell you there was a large and extremely dangerous tornado on the ground."

Actually, Oklahoma has recently been very tornado free. There were only a few this year, the worst where at the Texas border near Sweetwater and Arnet. Last year the big story were twin tornadoes near El Reno, but only one damaged a few hangers at the airport. Unfortunately there were two deaths out in the panhandle in March. However the circumstances behind that where rare. The panhandle is normally not hit by such violent tornadoes and so I think people in the area where taken off guard.

A great thing to do is get a weather radio. As I already said, the majority of tornadoes are spotted and come with some advance warning, especially the most dangerous ones.

I would say, Check out Chicasha and Pauls Valley - Both have a African American Population and diversity - (More then most of the small towns) with quick freeway/turnpike access for your rig.

Great food - best burger place is J&W grill in Chickasha.

Welcome from another escapee from California. If you want to live 45 minutes from a "big' city you should look at the area between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. There are many small to mid-size towns. Stillwater is home to Oklahoma State Univ. Langston has its University--not too sure about the housing. Guthrie is right above Ok City plus its on I 35. I live in a small town between OK City and Tulsa. Most of the people are church-going. As for the "slender" country women--all women out this way are country!

I feel so stupid having asked all those dumb questions. I'm sorry to say, but people who live in California tend to think they have the corner on the market when it comes to awareness ... and matters of the heart and soul. (Few things could actually be further from the truth these days ...)

RACE: I see all kinds of mixed race babies (and adults) running around here. Black and Indian, White and Black, White and Indian ... (LOL). The genie is out of the bottle everywhere. Everybody knows what time it is. Yeah, you got some neaderthals running around ... but for the most part, people are a whole lot more real (as in "Not Fake" or arrogantly pretentious) than they are in "Cali" or most other places these days.
remember there is no such thing as a stupid question just a stupid assumption.

Class: I think I'm seeing a wide gap between the haves and have-nots. There is a middle class here. I have no idea abot the future of the economy here, but I will say that the first time a couple of guys from the trucking company and I went downtown Tulsa, we almost walked into a brother from Florida. He said he was working for a high tech company and mentioned that Google has already bought some land here in Tulsa in preperation for their move here. He claims that Tulsa is going to be one of the new Midwest high tech hubs. If so, this place is prime for anyone willing to risk gambling on starting a new buisness here. Looks like tons of potential.

Sex and Sexuality: All the comments posted by people worried about Oklahoma's openness to alternative sexuality and gays. There are TONS of gay people here. (LOL) No, I didn't leave them in California. Life is life no matter where you are in 2007. Oh, and while this is the Bible Belt, there is tons of drug use and tons of young people doing the same jiggy things that young people do everywhere else.

Rev. Carlton Person made a comment that was televised on the news here last week about Oklahoma's high rate of divorse despite all the bible belt thumping.

Quality of Life: It's differnt here ... but for those with who share the way I evaluate things ... it's also better here. IF you have a way you can make money "anywhere" (e.g. medicine, teaching, etc...) then your money will go a LOT further here than it will in places like California.

God bless change.... and the opportunity to make changes in our lives. (I'm not even going to spell check it )
remember there is no such thing as a stupid question just stupid assumptions. i too am from california and without getting into to much bashing, i dont think people realize just how bad it is getting in ALOT of california cities and towns very me me me oriented.
