Typical post of an OU fan too....I think ya better check your 2nd only to Notre Dames comment.....pretty sure ( actually I know ) Alabama and a few other schools got ya beat too.
And sure you can cheer about the past.....but thats the past. Sports lives in the here and now. OU had a admirable season for all their troubles.....OSU had an even better season despite their injuries too. Both teams stepped up to adversity times 100, and I hope OSU joins OU with a season finale win. Then we just need to Texas to win the national championship and the big 12 will look a bit better for it. Big 12 took a major blow this year in it's argument to be the top conference thanks to OSU/OU/Mizzou/TTech all choking on key games.

Officially the NCAA does not officially name a National Champion for their Football Bowl Subdivision "FBS" (formerly known as Division I-A). They rely on outside organizations to name a National Champion. Currently that organization is the Bowl Championship Series. The teams with the most BCS National Titles are the University of Florida and Louisiana State University (LSU) with two. The BCS has been around for 11 years, so if that is what you would consider "modern era" that is your easy answer.
Other than that, really the only thing you can do is look at All Time National Championships. Before the BCS, there were a plethora of National polls and rankings, so there was no clear national champion every single year before 1998.
As for all time champions... Alabama claims the most all-time with 12. Notre Dame and Michigan both claim 11 and Ohio State, Oklahoma, Southern Cal all claim 7
You guys shouldn't get your shorts in a wad............
Here is a list of all the winners of college football national champions.....with Princeton leading with 24 (the most recent was 1935) followed by Yale with 19 (the most recent in 1909).

Speaking of LSU's two NC titles, it must be nice to get to play the title game on basically your home stadium - New Orleans! LAME!!!!!!!!!!! How many more titles would OU and Nebraska have if they got to play the title games in Omaha and Oklahoma City?? How many times did OU and Neb have to play in the Orange bowl against Miami, Florida St, etc.? Makes the titles from OU and Nebraska that much more impressive IMO.
Oh, and put USC in that same conversation for the titles they won in the Rose bowl, 8 miles from campus!!!!!!!! LAME!
That's just part of football, sometimes there is a home field advantage. Hardly anyone wins their home games all of the time, so I don't think it's that big of a deal. I hate when people try to make excuses for losing. If teams execute the way they plan to, it doesn't matter where they play. I've never heard a coach or player or anyone else who actually is involved in football complain about losing because they didn't have enough of their fans in the stands. Championship teams can win anywhere. Grow up, having to play away from home is part of football.
I can't stand USC, but their recent NC wins were so one-sided that I don't think it would have mattered where they played.

Claiming is one thing and what actually is reality as perceived by the majority is another. I had this exact discussion with my friend from Alabama just a couple of years ago....he was always taught growing up that Bama was the national titles leader...but once I introduced him into the discussion pertaining to the Associated Press he changed his mind. Many teams have "claimed" titles that do not mesh with national consensus. :-]
Again, the Associated Press or AP is the most prestigious polling/ranking system because it is based on national consensus not just regional voting/opinion. Even with the issues you raise on the consensus of legit titles (actually I raised it, ha!)....that still does not undo the Sooners' dominate overall winning percentage, 4 coaches with 100 wins, 7 national titles, and a 47 game win streak (one of the few records in sports that will not be broken...along with Dimaggio's 56 game hit streak?). The overall portfolio of history/tradition of Oklahoma's football program is 2nd to none. Yes, I am biased of course, but the proof is in the puddin' my friend...you can argue with me all you want and that does not change the fact that OU is the premiere college football program based on the plethora of data I've listed for you.
Also, the modern era began post WWII. Here's a link you might find helpful with this discussion: Oklahoma is the Best College Football Program of the Modern Era. You might find it interesting that even many SEC fans will concede OU's reign at the top in college football. ;-)

I just state the facts as the are....facts. I dont bend the facts for my team....if ya wanna bend the "national championship" category so your can fit your team in at the top then ok. I'm an OK state fan....we haven't even won one. They aren't that good....but they finish the season rated above OU so it's all good

I did not "bend" anything....but if you wanna get dirty and imply that...I'm not gonna bite and I'm not going that route, Friend.
