Just wondering about Omaha's suburbs. What are the drive times from some of the major suburbs to, for instance, 72nd & Dodge? Do most suburbs have their own grocery stores, etc? Also, any specifics about individual suburbs would be much appreciated (e.g. schools, types of neighborhoods, etc). Thanks in advance!!!

Check out Papillion (Welcome to Facebook)

Its growing but still have a feel of a smallertown and not a suburb as much as West Omaha just feels like a suburb. They have good routes to the whole metro area - I work downtown Omaha and 20 minutes is easy to do. For grocery, shopping, out to eat, etc I rarely leave the Papillion area - has about all you need.

20-25 minutes. It's not bad.

Bellevue is pretty nice. Pretty much from any of the suburbs will be a 20-30 minute drive to central omaha. Heck, anywhere in Omaha takes 20-30 minutes to go across town average

Thanks for the drive times! Sounds very reasonable... I wondered about Bellevue, Rez... Haven't heard as much about it as say Papillion or Millard. Will look into that as well, since it seems like a good location in relation to Omaha.

We are in West O, in the Elkhorn School District... I am not sure if that means we would have been Elkhorn had it not been annexed or not. We've only been here 6 weeks and haven't experienced the school year yet. But I was worried about our kids being nervous about the 1st day of school, making new friends, etc. but our neighborhood has so many kids, it is not going to be a problem. I don't think a day has passed since we moved in that they haven't had someone to play with.

My husband works downtown and doesn't mind his commute at all. It's probably a few more miles than he traveled in San Antonio, but he has yet to encounter a traffic jam that used to be a daily occurrence, so his commute is actually quicker.

As for shopping, there is tons of it out here. I think Sam's Club and Home Depot are the only ones I have to drive 5 miles to get to. Everything else is within 1-2 miles.

Bellevue is on the far east side of the metro and Gretna is on the far west side of the metro while Papillion/LaVista/Ralston are in the center of the metro.... so Papillion/LaVista/Ralston have a more balanced drive time to Downtown Omaha, Central Omaha, and West Omaha.

Good to know, thanks! If I remember correctly the far East side was what would be considered downtown, right? It seems like most potential employers for my husband are right in the middle of Omaha, so maybe one of the more centrally located suburbs would be better...
