How would the city benefit from a sales tax holiday?

people might want to buy more stuff if they have more money to spend

bosco:

why is it okay for Council bluffs to have

and in the process get business from omaha and yet Omaha dont want to make a incentive to keep people from going to council bluffs

that is why Omaha loses business to CB, cause CB lures people with great deals and yet Omaha acts with their head up their butt (excuse my language)

when it comes to great ideas for Omaha's economy and preventing them losing business to other cities.

I mean Omaha is loing business and sanity by not competing with CB for business on the tax Holiday it has every year.

bosco, I mean ur not honestly supporting CB having a advantage over Omaha when it comes to generating business and money

two other advantages CB has over Omaha:

they have casinos and they also have a movie theatre with a IMAX screen

catch up with Council Bluffs, people of Omaha

Tax-Free Holiday Tickles Shoppers, Retailers Alike

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa --

Retailers in Iowa said the state's tax-free holiday this weekend is a lucrative two days, bringing in more business than they can usually get in an entire month.

The sales tax exemption applies to clothes and shoes that are less than $100.

Parents said it's a way to stock their children's wardrobe without draining their wallet.

"We ended up saving like $70 in taxes itself, but with all the specials, we saved over $400, as well," said Barb Stoj.

Many Nebraskans crossed the river to ditch the 7 percent tax.

"Why not?" Stoj said.

They started a tax-free weekend in New Mexico because we were losing a bunch of business to Texas during their tax-free weekend. It's been amazing. Even with the limit (which I think is $100), some businesses offer tax free incentives on purchases over the amount just to drum up business. I think the Apple Store is doing it this year so people can buy their products without paying sales tax.

Yeah, but if the city loses out on the tax revenue, it's kinda pointless isn't it?

I see your point here, but it seems like the city is probably losing out on revenue anyway if people go to Council Bluffs during their tax-free weekend to do all their school shopping. If Omaha had a tax-free weekend it would help the local economy, even if the city lost the tax revenue for that weekend. Better than helping Council Bluffs economy...

The Kansas City metro area is similar to the Council Bluffs/Omaha scenario in that the Missouri side of Kansas City & Lee's Summit honor the tax-free back-to-school holiday but the Kansas side does not. It really does bring the shoppers in from those areas that don't have it. All one has to do is look at the license plates in the parking lots.
