Default North O. queried on transportation (meanwhile, where is west omaha bus service?)

how bout some bus service out to elkhorn (aka down maple street)

or a bus service between westroads and oakview.

======================================

North O. queried on transportation
By Sam Womack
The Urban League of Nebraska and other groups want to learn how to improve public transportation for north Omahans.

Over the next year, residents will be asked if they have trouble getting to jobs, medical appointments or shopping trips using public transportation and how the Metro transit system could be improved.

The goal is to gather information that will help bus and van systems provide more efficient service, according to the survey sponsors — the Urban League, North Omaha Development Project and Metropolitan Area Planning Agency.

At a meeting this week, community leaders were asked to welcome two survey-takers, Linda McKleny and Zola Cunegin, into area churches, businesses and other locations to collect information.

Approximately 80 surveys have been collected so far, but organizers are hoping for more than a thousand. Results will be shared with Metro, formerly Metro Area Transit.

“People have been very receptive to us so far,” McKleny said. “They're looking for change. . .and would like to see a better bus system.”

btw: all the surveys folks do aint mean squat if real action wont be taken to improve public transporation in omaha.

we need more routes for west omaha and finally have the 5 and 55 routes run on sundays.

We want Omaha Metro bus to implement this "Route 64" for Northwest Omaha.

well, people in the West tend to be more affluent and less reliant on public transportation. So it makes sense that they would put more focus on those with the most need in North Eastern Omaha.

Service needs to be expanded all around. Stopping at 120th & Maple when growth along Maple has expanded nearly 60 blocks is poor planning.

I agree (even having a number 1 type route that goes down maple between 120th and 204th would be nice

that should have been done a decade ago (when west maple had stuff all the way to 156th and beyond at the time)

even 5 years ago having a bus route down west maple would have been nice

also a bus route that goes between westroads and oakview would be nice.

btw,

Better bus service for Bluffs?

These changes were announced Tuesday, the result of a study to improve bus service.

“Iowa Western Community College and Metro Crossing were big destinations people continuously said they wanted to go to,” said Thomas Wittmann, a consultant for the Seattle-based firm of Perteet that conducted the study.

Many requested bus service, especially at night, to attend classes at Kaplan University in the Mall of the Bluffs, he said.

The plan is to consolidate current routes into two main ones. The Red Route that would serve the Lakin campus on North 16th Street, Iowa Western and the Mall of the Bluffs; the Blue Route would service southern Council Bluffs, including the Manawa Power Centre, Metro Crossing and Marketplace shopping centers, the Mid-America Center and the nearby Social Security office. Both would serve downtown Council Bluffs and run more frequently along West Broadway.

“There would be a bus every 30 minutes from 16th Street and West Broadway to downtown Omaha,” Wittmann said. “Now, it’s every 45 minutes.”

There will be, however, “trade-offs,” as he described it. This includes the elimination of Sunday service.

While buses will continue to serve the Mall of the Bluffs and the Manawa Power Centre, including the Wal-Mart store, they will no longer stop in front of the stores, Wittmann said. Instead, the Mall of the Bluffs bus will stop along Bennett Avenue, while the bus going to Wal-Mart will let shoppers off on Manawa Centre Drive.

The only exception, he said, will be in the late evening when buses stop by the Kaplan University area in the Mall of the Bluffs.

The Red Route will operate on weekdays, hourly between 5 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. and every 90 minutes thereafter until 11:30 p.m. There will be no Saturday or Sunday service. The Blue Route will operate hourly during the week from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. On Saturdays, it will provide service every 90 minutes from 6 a.m. to 8:50 p.m.

The study was requested by the City Council to determine how bus service could be improved.

I suspect with bus service being disolved on sundays in CB, Omaha bus service on sundays will down the line be dis-solved as well.

oh, I mean what little bus service there is in omaha on sundays. I mean the 5 and 55 dont run and neither does the 22 route.

Has the city considered purchasing electric powered buses? The Chinese company BYD is running test fleets of electric buses in China and Los Angeles, and so far, they're performing wonderfully.

doubt the city had considered it. some leaders in omaha (on both left/right) are stuck in past.

(coughs) Curt Simon who runs our town's bus system

this is also Omaha we are talking about that still dont have a chic-fil-a that the public can go to and eat at. that shows how far behind omaha is

(among other reasons omaha is a bit slow compared to other cities it's size)
