City council just voted to recommend naming the North Freeway after MLKjr.

While I have no problem with MLKjr and find him to be a great man, I think this is a horrible idea. The freeway should be named after someone local that either had national or local impact. Stop naming important roads after people who never gave Omaha a thought, geesh.

It WAS called the Malcolm X Freeway not long after it was built, and the interstate signs back then all had his name on them. I remember that distinctly. I have no problem with them naming it the MLK Freeway, but I think they should name a major highway in west Omaha or Sarpy County after MLK-------but just to pi$$ people off.

I have some ideas:

Johnny Rodgers Rd.
Johnny Carson Causeway
Tommie Frazier Freeway
Tom Osbourne Overpass
Dr. Schlichtemeier Skyway
Gerald Ford Freeway

No I'm not serious.

I just find it pointless and stupid. I'd be more in favor of Ford or even Carson, if Cali can do it why can't we.

I do think it should probably be someone that had a particular impact on the black community, but not MLK.

Naming this in North Omaha makes me feel like we're still segregating, it also reminds me of this Chris Rock sketch MLK Boulevard

That is funny. Though, it's not as if when they change the name, there will be crime brought to the area... It's already there!

Being that Malcolm X was born in Omaha and the KKK ran his family out of the state, I think it would be a notable gesture to rename the Freeway after him again.
