After our first baby, and letting the apartment get too small for us, my girlfriend and I have decided to buy our first house. After looking at so many of what seem to be the same house, we have narrowed it down to two choices, both around 144th and Giles. Each house has its pros and cons, so we're quite torn between the two. So, houses aside, can anybody give some information on how the neighborhoods are? I'm looking for important information that you don't really consider when buying a house like: How soon after a big snow do the snow plows show up? Any information would be great! Thanks in advance!

I lived a Sarpy County neighborhood a little to the Northwest of where you're looking for 10 years when I was growing up. One thing you have to take into account is that you will be in an SID. Typically houses in SID's have higher property taxes than if you lived in an incorporated area like LaVista or Omaha. In addition, you will have to pay for garbage collection. The county will take care of snow removal and Sarpy typically did a really good job.

Another thing about that aera in general is that there are train tracks nearby so you might hear the train every now and again. Other than the train and maybe highway traffic, the neighborhood's you are considering are fairly quiet.

That's my two cents.

I lived in The Meadows for about 10 years while in High School and afterward. It's a nice neighborhood---fairly quiet, modest homes. Taxes are high though--expect to pay $2500/year or more for a modest $110 k house.
