I don't think it's necessarily the granite countertops or other fixtures that makes a place expensive. It's more the higher quality of life created by living in density. Even "white box" empty shells have purchase prices of more than $175/square foot in the Old Market. $500/month would barely even cover taxes for the landlord, let alone HOA dues, insurance, mortgage interest, etc. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it would be charity, not business.

This is true, but the Enron building is well outside the Old Market. It's actually in Midtown. Even the Farm Credit Building is a few blocks outside of the OM.

I know that both Union Plaza and The Conant have sub $600/month units. I was looking at both of them when I was planning to move back to Omaha.
