Dr. John Mackiel made a surprise announcement at Monday's Omaha Public Schools Board of Education meeting. The superintendent of the state's largest school district will retire next year.

Mackiel notified the board that he will retire in August of 2012. He has been the superintendent at Omaha Public Schools since 1997.

my comment: good. now if only has been a OPS board member since 1979 Sandra Jensen could retire in 2012.

time for new ideas coming out of OPS District 12.

I am not at all impressed with this guy. He's way overpaid...I'm guessing he will still be making hundreds of thousands in retirement.

I dont think anyone is really impressed with Mackiel

I wish Sandra Jensen and Luanne Nelson would retire. they and Mackiel are holdovers from last century.

Just curious, but it seems your entire diatribe against them is based on how long they've been serving. Do you actually have no problems with their performance?

Dr. John Mackiel was Superintendent when I was a student and honestly I don't have a problem with him. Things ran and they ran well. But I was only there for his first 2 years.

their attitude and their lust for power. and their arrogance towards others. you see it on tv the 2 act like they know better than everyone else.

Lets not forget Jensen wanted OPS to take over the other school districts. and her, it's my way or else attitude has angered a lot of people.

I saw her on tv a while back and she had this snippy attitude towards Justin Wayne (the only board member who actually asks questions) and she and others got mad cause Justin just raised a few questions/concerns over a issue.

the ops board when you see it in person or on tv is like this: Jensen and 11 people who are assistants (not board members)

when it comes to education, we deserve ops board members who care about the education of OPS, not fixated on getting re-elected so they cant hold onto their board seat for decades.

Nelson on her channel 17 seems to some apparently over-coached youngsters with canned questions to set up their canned answers.

The kids ask softball questions that are almost insulting. Daily show and Colbert report ask more serious questions on things than the folks on Nelson's show does.

plus Nelson's so boring and seems to put people to sleep on her show.

I remember back in 2006 or 2007 seeing then Central High prinicpal Greg Emmel who was bored and almost sleeping while Nelson was talking to her others on her show.

I have seen other guests fall asleep on her show or give a roll their eyes look when Nelson said things.

So the only policy decision you disagree with (one of) them on is the old one city one district idea?

That's it?

among others. I think Jensen stealing District 6 seat from Jin Enright (who won in 2008 and was forced to step down cause he may have "health problems" while on the school board) (and Jensen putting in 2 puppet candidates in his seat) since is another issue I have with Jensen

Ok, wait a minute here. How is taking over for someone who had to step down due to health concerns "stealing" their seat? Using that same logic, Tom Mulligan "stole" Chuck Sigerson's seat.

It's becomes 'stealing' when you decide you don't like the guy.
