Omaha has earned the League of American Bicyclists bronze level designation for bicycle commuting friendlessness. While it shows Omaha has come a long way in a short time, it also points out that we still have a long way to go. I would hope to see Omaha go platinum in my lifetime, but as only one city has that distinctions, it seems unlikely.

It's good to see that Omaha is starting to grow out of its car stigma. Although, I think Omaha's focusing too much on only biking. We should be looking at rail transit as well. I hope we don't spend all of our transportation money of bike infastructure.

It's not only biking, but bus and streetcar as well. I fully expect within 5 years that panning will be done on bringing back the streetcar system. Bicycling is just getting the spotlight because it's big in the nation right now.

I can see the way they are thinking though. If you talk the smaller and relatively inexpensive steps of promoting a bike culture, you get the side effect of making them more open to mass transit options and can then bring in the street car line.

Exactly much of this bike spending has been from federal grants intended for bike transit. Also investing in improved bicycle infrastructure will promote further mass transit.

Yes it would be nice to see rail, but that costs millions. Bike lanes cost a few thousand. I will take what I can get in the short term.

Omaha 233 bike commuters .

Lincoln has 2000+. This kind of publicity will only enhance those numbers though.

I'm sure Lincoln's numbers are heavily skewed like that because of UNL.

I doubt the consider students as "commuters" though. Sure there are plenty of teachers that ride to class, but that is still bicycle commuting.

Those numbers are WAY off. The census puts omaha at just over 500, and it historically severely under-counts bicycle commuters. Not to mention that the census says Omaha's bicycle commuters are 100% male.

Just look at UP on most days. Bikes surrounding their headquarters. Likely well over 150 of them. Shame every business can't be that way.
