The N.W. Radial Highway area is looking down. I'm betting this corridor is one of the focuses of Omaha's future redevelopment plans... Considering that, what would you do to spruce this area up?

Personally, I would love to see a streetcar route on this road to start up some density. This would be the streetcar to serve Benson.

In this map, it is the red route : Aksarben-Leavenworth Streetcar - Google Maps

I would keep the current width of seven lanes, completely re-do the concrete roadway and fix the sidewalks. From there, I would take away the innermost lanes and install streetcar tracks that are separated from automobile traffic with a curb. The stations would be in between the tracks.

Anybody else have thoughts of what to do with this area?

That area is very flat so it is perfect for both pedestrian and bicycle traffic. I would make the sidewalks wide to encourage walking. I also would install a 2 way cycle track. I would reduce the lanes to no more than 2 each way to make room for improvements (there is more to life than the car). I would try and encourage mixed use development and apartment complexes to choose the area as there are simply too many single family homes for an urban area. Also to make an urban area truly livable I would like to see small grocery stores every few blocks so people don't have to waste money driving to the store and they can just walk there.

In case you have not noticed I am BIG into new urbanism and in restricting, but not eliminating, the automobile and the damage it causes.

In 10 years, I wouldn't be surprised to see Benson/NW Radial area a very dense, gentrified part of town. It has potential; right now it just reminds me of another leavenworth.

I think we could all agree streetcars would be the ultimate.

An alternate idea would be making it a boulevard with a separated bike trail. It would look much much better and would continue our improving bike amenities.

If Omaha wants to get serious about density we seriously need to improve biking amenities. More trails like the Keystone or Papio would be the ultimate; bikes lanes would also be fantastic. When I plan to go somewhere on bike I get on google maps and see what little side streets I can take, what major streets have sidewalks, etc...usually I just end up taking the truck.
