Default If money was not an issue, what would you want done in the city?

Personally, I would have the At&t building renovated back to its formal glory. You can kind of see it in the left side of the pictures in these documents. It was beautiful and the 70s add on was (like most things in the 70s) a complete disaster and should be redone too.

What would you want done?

I think everybody around these parts has seen this, but money not being an issue here, it's a no brainer. Build light rail and the rest will follow. If we build Light rail, we will quickly become a "big city".

I'd want to see many of the single family home neighborhoods in the eastern part of the city flattened, preserving any historically significant structures, and make them more European in nature. More friendly towards the pedestrian and cyclist. Where most things a person needs are within a 10-15 minute walk. People could still own single family homes, just out of the city center.

I have had really unrealistic wishes/ideas for the land from Dodge to California/ 46th to Saddle Creek.

Basically my Sim City vision included:

Row houses fronting 46th.
Office tower on Dodge and Saddle Creek.
Condo Tower on California and Saddle Creek.
The rest on the interior would include mixed use with retail on the bottom with offices on the 2nd floor and apartments above that.
A park is also included in my pipe dream.

If I had ~400 million burning a hole in my pocket this is what I would do for the city.

1. Take 4-80 and sink it below ground so that roads and sidewalks could go over it.
2. Completely re-do most of our main streets (Dodge, Leavenworth, 72nd, etc) with extensive landscaping.
3. Force Conagra to build that skyscraper ( ).
4. Turn North Downtown into a complete urban neighborhood. Similar to the Old Market but larger and slightly taller brick buildings with more of a neighborhood feel ( grocery stores, affordable apartments, office space).

Some type of extensive light rail system with a hub in downtown, going down dodge, out to bellevue, papillion, la vista, out west.

Also, city-wide free Wi-Fi.

Bring back the main Omaha Public Library back to its original building, tear the Clark library down and build a tower on the site.

The old library building is awesome!

Oh and on that thought bring back the old City Hall too, maybe give it some sort of tasteful add on for space, but bring it back and tear down the monolith!

This thread reminded me of a great article I read called, "How the city moves us." It talks about ideas for NYC, some of which are smart and others that are fantasy (i.e. if money was not an issue). Makes you think about ideas for Omaha, as well.
