I have been looking on line for houses or appartments in Omaha and find a lot of the appts are in the NW section,is this part of Omaha a good place to live? we are 63 years old. Are there many houses for rent in Omaha? all I can ever see are appartments. another question is would we be able to live on $1700.00 a month?

NW Omaha isn't bad. I live in Southwest Omaha, but as long as you are far enough west you should be fine. There are houses for rent, but from what I've seen they are mostly in the midtown area and east of 72nd around Dodge. You probably aren't going to find much for rentals out in the burbs.

As far as your budget, that all depends. That seems a little low for 2 people, but if you live very modestly I'm sure it could be done.

I would guess you are looking at 800-1000/month if you rent a decent house. Then you can probably tack on another 100 in base utilities (electric, gas, water, garbage, etc.). If you start talking about adding cable/internet (100-200 depending on what you get), you start eating into your 1700/mo pretty quick when you talk about food/any car expenses, etc.

1700 a month is quite low. That leaves an ideal renting range of about 560 or so. Which is doable, but you'd be on a thin budget.

To answer your other question, NW Omaha is nice in the sense that it's safe. It's typical suburbia anywhere west of roughly 108th street. Not much to hate, not much to love. It's kind of just...there. You'll need to be more specific about what you like to get a more tailored answer. We can only answer in the vaguest ways with limited information, and in the vaguest sense of the word, sure, NW Omaha is nice.

that is the amount we get together on retirement after insurance is paid. I currently work pt at Walmart but don't think I'll be able to work much longer. So I will need to be retired before the move and my husband is not in good health.

We will also look into apartments for low income, I've seen several of them on rent.com

Where are you from now. You might want to try a smaller town, yet close enough for quality medical.

right now we live in Michigan, but 3 of our sons live in Omaha, which is why we want to move there.
