Our family is thinking about relocating to NE. We love Omaha and prefer to live there. I would work in Omaha, but my husband would work in Lincoln.

If we lived in west Omaha, how bad is the commute?

I've heard it is about 45 mins and it is a 6 lane?

I'd love to hear from people who drive this commute and if you enjoy the down time to clear your mind from work or if that extra 2 hrs in the car/day is horrible. I realize that is a personal decision, but it always helps to hear opinions...

Are there a lot of snowy days making the commute even longer?

Accidents/rush hour traffic?

Thanks for any info/opinions!

From my place on South 42nd street to the 180 exit in Lincoln is 50 minutes. I can imagine if you lived somewhere like 144th and harrison, it would take 40 or less. Really not a bad drive at all - 6 lanes most (if not all) the way, and although traffic gets pretty crunk at some parts during the day, it's never enough to actually physically slow you down.

It really will depend on which part of Lincoln he works in. If it is near the interstate the commute will be very reasonable considering the distance. If he has to go though 5 miles of city though it will be way too long to bare. Lincoln has actually really bad traffic for a city its size. Poorly planned streets(in my opinion) make driving in that city a chore.

Looks like it is right by UNL-east campus...is that a decent spot for easy in/out?

It took me about 35 minutes on average to get from east central lincoln to Paypal (back before I became a programmer). I'd expect about that or maybe a little longer, but not much.

It isn't far from Cornhusker which will be nice. Omaha to east campus probably will take 5 minuets more than Omaha to city campus even though east campus is a closer drive!

Still shouldn't be bad, I was more saying a commentary about south Lincoln.

I'd look at the far Southwestern part of the metro area near I-80 for housing. There is no such thing as heavy traffic on I-80 between Omaha and Lincoln; it's a breeze.

My dad commutes from Papillion(Omaha Suburb) to Lincoln everday and hates it. The weather and construction will be your two big obstacles on the commute. The drive typically takes an hour during rush hour periods, but the drive gets old quick, especially if you're in your rapidly approaching 50 like my old man. I would suggest looking at moving to Gretna. It's the farthest southwestern suburb of Omaha and would split the commute up between the two of you.

You wouldn't catch me driving between Omaha and Lincoln every day. That's just another 60+ minutes of life wasted in a car. I used to commute 25 minutes to Valley and I even hated that... Maybe it's just me though. If you have to do it this way, I would suggest Gretna just because it pretty much splits the distance.
