Buffy,
The "official" Omaha metro area something around 850,000. Not quite a million, but in the vicinity. And that number does NOT include Lincoln. If you would extend to Lincoln the number would be easily over a million. Remember the 400,000 is only Omaha proper. This fact is pretty well documented. You're right "Omaha" is about 500,000 and the "Omaha Metro" (which I was speaking of) is about 800,000 and 900,000. But the Omaha Metro is the relevant number when speaking about Omaha. The number you quoted doesn't include Papillion, La Vista, Bellevue, etc. etc. And for all intents and purposes its all one big city and that's why "metro area" #'s are tracked. Anyway, we're just talking about two different sets of numbers and the number you get for the "metro number" just depends on what system you're using...google it and you'll get a variety of numbers for the metro area, but they're all between 800,000 to 900,000. |

Seriously pablo-me, did you expect to start a thread in the Omaha forum about ridiculous things that you hate about Omaha and not expect a reaction??
All agreed, "CHIGGERS" exist in almost every state in the US. I have been to all of the 48 contiguous states and other countries, such as Mexico & Canada, and many of the places that I have been have "CHIGGERS"!! Get a clue....many home owners spray their lawns for ticks, mosquitos, and "CHIGGERS". Take care of your lawn and maybe you would not have "CHIGGERS & RATS". Are you sure you aren't seeing opossum's--they kind of look like rats. Why wouldn't call an exterminator after having a rat living in your walls for 2 yrs.? Gross-- ![]() As far as "illegals" go, I am referring to one of mp's previous post's, how do you know that the people that you speak of are in fact, "illegals"? I for one am proud that people who want to have a better quality of life immigrate to the US. And in agreeance with a few other posters, Omaha, compared to many US cities, is far from being a "sanctuary city". Property taxes, again in agreeance with mp, have you checked on what type of house you would get for $135,000 in, I believe you said, Aspen? Pretty sure you won't!! Good luck w/that one. Anyways, your complaints are ridiculous as far as I am concerned. You don't have to tell me twice, I know that we are entitled to our own opinions, hence my response to your RIDICULOUS so-called complaints about Omaha. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR QUEST TO FIND A NEW PLACE TO LIVE: YOU'LL HAVE TO LET ALL OF US ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT LOVING, CHIGGER, SNAKE, & RAT HAVING OMAHAEANS KNOW WHERE YOU END UP AND WHAT OTHER RIDICULOUS THINGS YOU HAVE COME UP WITH TO COMPLAIN ABOUT. ![]() |

I guess I knew I'd get a reaction. There are ten times more Big Red flags than American ones flying here (not that Nebraskans are less patriotic, just proud to be Nebraskans and that's great!)
I did some research and found chiggers are most prominent in Nebraska, Iowa and Missourri. Can't ever remember them growing up in Wisconson, and honestly had never met them before. The immigration topic is too complex to get into. I just noticed it here more. That may be a sign of the times, but I do think Big Business in Nebraska will speak louder than the voice of the people. The house in Aspen was selling for 1.25 million and the property taxes on it were around $2,800...that's less than my 136k house here. Rattatouie.....Yep, it grossed me out when I caught him and my wife did want me to call in a professional, but this was personal. He was extremely intelligent and I wanted to take him alive if possible. For the first year, I thought he was a squirrel because there are quite a few in my neighborhood. He was stealthy, almost ninja-like. Never to be seen, only heard scratching on the wall occassionally. I couldn't figure out how he ate and drank. I honestly thought our house was haunted because I would hear the cabinet door in the kitchen closing by itself late at night. Then one night, I was sitting in the kitchen and I literally saw the door under the sink open! I looked inside and found a small hole he'd made by the pipe. It was all becoming clear. The engineer who built the house had put a vent at ground level to the basement shower and Rattatouie must've come in when he was young, but couldn't get out. I spoke with the humane society and determined from the things he took from the trashcan under the sink, that his diet was not consistent with a squirrel. I tried various store bought traps. He was too smart for any of them. He even picked up a hair trigger killer trap and disabled it by lodging it in the metal frame of the waste basket! (I took a picture as proof) I came to respect his cunning nature and intelligence, but time was running out. My research showed an average life span for these creatures to be around 18 months. He was living on borrowed time and I had to get him before he expired. I was patient and began devising my own traps, hoping to take him alive and give him back to the community. I had to think like him. Ultimately, I laid a plastic bag in the waste basket which was filled half way up with water and placed an assortment of his favorite morsels on top. In the morning, his saga had ended and I felt some sadness....but mostly, I was relieved our battle was over. I salute you Rattatouie, you were a formidable adversary. BTW MP; I live in a nice middle class neighborhood. Something to think about if your cupboard doors start opening by themselves. Last edited by pablo-me; 10-10-2007 at 02:51 AM. |

One fact about Omaha Metro area that everyone seems to be forgetting is that the metro area also brings into the total population part of Iowa as well. I think that there are three counties in Iowa and five in Nebraska that make up the Omaha Metro area. So the real Nebraska population for Omaha Metro might be closer to 700,000 to 800,000 or less if you take out Iowa.
