$65 is a LOT compare to what most of the industrialized world pays. In the states $65 is high end cable (~15 mbps), while elsewhere $65 would get you gigabit and likely other services as well. Though those countries either have state run service or have strong competition.

Agreed Harshbarj- This is because the telecommunications industry is not regulated.

Internet is $29.95 a month in Madison, WI (Charter Communications). Great reliability and speed.

but what's the speed? 10mbps, 20mbps? Also Charter Communications regularly is ranked as one of the worst providers in the nation and as recently as 2012 was ranked by J.D. Power and Associates as being one of the worst providers for customer satisfaction. That to me says stay away at any cost.

Cox has it's problems, like outages most LATE nights, but I download at 3.1 MBps(mega bytes per second or around 24mbps) regularly. So an mp3 takes 1-2 seconds and a linux iso around 5 min for a cd sized image.

You don't live in NYC anymore. You may find you spend $25 a month more on internet, but $1000 less on rent. But by all means, lets quibble about the internet and lack of mom and pop dollar stores.

Listen, it may sound trite that I am complaining about this and that- the fact remains that I am without a car and doing this all on my own- I never done anything like this before- The metro is only reliable during the day really and not past 6- But I am taking advantage of both the 11 and 2 lines to help me go from place to place when needed.

Everything though is going remarkably well. People here have been incredibly kind and that goes a long way with me. Some people delivered my bed (from craigslist), a tv, my landlord picked me up from the airport. All these things you wouldn't get in NY easily. I guess I miss the convenience of NYC, that's all.

Turns out I don't have to pay $65 for internet- got a fantastic deal...that's all I am going to say....

Get an unlimited data plan and use your phone as a modem. 40 bucks a month a lot of plans and you have a hot spot about anywhere.
