As others have alluded to, be sure to stay near the Old Market. I am not embarrassed at all to say that it is a very nice place with a romantic ambience and many good restaurants. It is also within walking distance to Heartland of America Park and the riverfront area with a nice pedestrian bridge over the Missouri River.

Another good place to consider during September is the botanical garden: Lauritzen Gardens - Omaha Botanical Center

The most romantic part of the city is the Old Market. I would plan on a carriage ride or maybe even a gondola ride in Heartland of America Park. There are a ton of dining options in the Old Market. For Italina, I'd recommend Nicola's. Hands down, the best Italian food you'll find downtown perhaps the entire city. Hotel-wise, you could do something old and historic like The Magnolia. If you want something more modern, check out the hotels in the Old Market. Just a bit further west and you could try Element Hotel. In addition to the zoo, I would recommend either a show at Orpheum or Holland. If you're into museums, Durham is pretty neat.
