I didn't think you were judging. There were some well before your posts that were though.

I thank all of you for your support and advice. I have to say it has been helpful and has calmed my nerves significantly. I have to say, I am still uneasy of course because I have to walk in to court with that risk, even though its so highly unlikely. I completed my STOP class today for the speeding, so I assume I just bring that certificate to court with me? I go on Dec 10th, and I will post immediately what the end result is. So far, I have paid 180 for the class, extra money to the insurance company for going without, and unsure of the court and fine costs. So, this would have been easier if I had insurance, and I fully learned my lesson. I will not miss a payment or forget anything like this, unfortunately it took this to scare me in to a more organized mind set. I will be happy when it is all over and done with.

Just go in with all of your documentation (Stop class and new insurance certificate), don't be argumentative, and just be appologetic that it was an "oversight" and that you've learned the importance of not letting it slip... no big deal - just good lesson learned.

With that mindset/attitude you will be fine. Best case is it won't cost you anymore and you'll be done... or it could cost you that other $100+costs ($148?).... most likely nothing more than that.

Good luck

You will be fine. I missed the part about the stop class. You are to be allowed only one time at STOP so with you being allowed to take the classes this must have been you first time with a traffic ticket. This fact along with you having current insurance should go well for you in court and like I said before I hope that your ticket is dismissed and this is coming from a retired Police Officer. Also don't be afraid they will not bite and public hanging went out years ago anyway.

Good luck and will be looking to see what happens in court.

How often have you heard of the court actually putting people in jail for no insurance? I have the same problem but in Michigan. We don't have a class that I need to go to, but I have a court date on 12/18. I will have insurance then and my plates renewed and will take that documentation to court. I don't really care about if the fines are waived or not, but I absolutely do not want to go to jail.

Driven97,

Sorry I don't know how they do things in Michigan. Every state is different. All I can tell you about is Nebraska. The class that is being discussed here is a program that deals with minor traffic tickets like speeding that is not over 20 miles over the speed limit. I don't know if Michigan has something like this or not. I can tell you that driving with no insurance is not one of the traffic tickets that you can go to class to take care of. Also you are allowed to take the STOP classes just one time. Nebraska does register you into a data base where the County Attorney who can allow you to attend checks to make sure that you have not or have attended a class.

It would be interesting to learn what other states do so why not come back here and let us folks here in Nebraska know how you came out with your ticket.

Good luck in court.

If this is your first time you might get lucky and just pay a small fine or nothing at all. I work as a receptionist for an insurance company and let me tell you, I see it all the time. If you are cought without insurance again-you might get your license suspended-they will asign an sr-22(form)-and the court will tell you how long you will need the sr-22 (most of the time is like 3 years)-and if you let your insurance lapse again the insurance company will send this info to the dmv and suspend your license automatically-and you will have to pay another fine gain. and so on, and so on, and so on. Good luck don't sweat it!!!!!!!!!

When my husband got a ticket for No Insurance in Lincoln, he got his license suspended, and had to get an SR22 for 3 years. So, he has to pay court costs, plus his fine (which I don't remember now what it was) and he the SR22 for 3 years. Also, the $50 reinstatement fee for getting his license back. He went to court with the proof of insurance he got the day after his ticket.

Best of luck to you!

Well court has come and gone, thankfully. I was given a fine for $100 and court costs so the total is $144. No jail, no sr-22. Come to find out, apparently the officer ticketed me just for no proof, the judge said since it was marked that way, I just get the minimum. Thanks to the officer that cut me some slack, and thanks to all of you that have shared your thoughts and experience. I can say, I will not be in this situation again.
