I just want some place safe since I was attacked and shot at in Atlanta just for a few dollars. I need out, any help?
You might be making the same mistake I made when I left Detroit. (If you are focusing on housing that must be in the suburbs)
All of Detroit has crime issues, like Atlanta, so when I got transferred to Lexington,KY I made SURE to find housing in the suburbs. Big surprise, I could have lived cheaper and more conveniently in the city itsself, Lexington was safe and very attractive. Moves after to Paducah, Chattanooga, and now Omaha I kept more of an open mind. I now live in the city itsself, MidTown/Aksarben area and have no fear of crime here.
You will love the easier commutes here! My Company's headquarters are in Atlanta. When I was in Chattanooga I was sent to Atlanta from time to time. Sheesh. Only 1 1/2 hours to your county line, then over an hour to get the last 15 miles by Marietta. Good thing I didn't need to get downtown or to the airport there.
I'm not ruling out LaVista or Papillion, have friends and co-workers living there. If your job is in LaVista, all the better, being close to work. But you can look in Omaha itsself for housing. The only area I would not look in is NorthEast. That leaves alot of other areas to look in.
( I'm surprised you have not received alot of posts from our 'Chamber Commerce' members )

Why would you want to live in LaVista (which is a suburb of Omaha) and drive to Lincoln to work? I know a lot of people that do it, but it's just silly to me. I get it when someone changes jobs, but if you're relocating here you may as well move to the city where the job is.

How about Waverly NE? It is much closer and still has a somewhat small town feel, or Ashland NE? Which is perfectly in between Omaha and Lincoln.
