What of it is your concern, MountainMen? There are few reasons why somebody would choose to be vegan, all of which are pretty obvious and probably stuff you've heard before. Asking somebody why the're vegetarian in this day and age... You've got to be trollin

Well, Busguy, it's a material aspect to his question. There's a big difference between being vegetarian for health reasons (especially as part of a New Years resolution to lose weight) and being vegan for ethical reasons. Depending on the two, you would choose different food/restaurants. Not all vegan food is healthy (french fries), and not all health food is vegan (fish). Also it depends on how strict he is. If he's vegetarian but eats fish it opens up a lot of options at expensive restaurants.

Mountainman, I'm strictly vegan. Don't even eat honey. Flatiron looks like it has a vegan dish

Pardon me for veering off topic, but I did not realize that honey is not part of the vegan diet. Very interesting.

I've heard good things about The Grey Plume, but I've never been there. A foodie friend really enjoys it.

While Sullivan's and Chophouse 801 are considered upscale, they are chain restaurants. My list is exclusively local owned, and several are maned by owner chefs. When I think of a special night I will always default to this type of restaurant.

Another reason is that the chains tend to cater to the business crowd and business traveler who don't care about the bill. Their prices reflect this. The OP mentioned a budget.

who cares if they are "chain stores". I so hate people who hate anything that is a chain store.

i go to local places, but I sometimes go to chain restaurants also.

I didn't say I hate them. I go to them. I just don't find anything "special" about them. So, when looking for a special night out, I avoid them

Local places...generally speaking...tend to be much better than chain places.
