To the folks looking into Omaha for a future home;
Don't forget the $50.00 a month mandatory sewer renovation TAX that will be coming into play in 2008, for every single Omaha homeowner.
Add $600.00 right on top of your tax statement.

Isn't that because of poor city planning from 50-70 years ago regarding the sewer system?
And now we have to invest almost 3billion to fix it?

Its from old methods of engineering and the issue is not unique to Omaha. The old days had sewer and storm water systems combined in a way that with a big storm raw sewage could end up and the end of the drain (the river).
It was a federal mandate to seperate the storm water systems from the sewage systems - complete seperation.
So not unique to Omaha and not necesarilly poor planning - it was planning based on the engineering standards of the day. But, yes we will all be paying for that now.

Not to toot my own horn but,thank God I live outside the city limits. I reap the benefits, but don't have to pay extra for them.

So, do you have your own septic system? If not then you're paying sewer $$ to some city/village.
Yeah, the $50/mo. isn't exactly welcomed, but its necessary. It doesn't bother me because I prefer a sewer system that is functional.

Exactly, and I also prefer a system that doesn't dump raw sewage into a river I go boating on.
Heck, the missouri smells like poop on a dry day.

As long as we're on this topic...anyone know why there's no grating in front of the storm drains? Couldn't a small pet (hopefully not a small child) be easily lost in one of those things? My husband and I both noticed that on our first visit here...we'd never seen anything like it.

Yeah, I pay city water/ sewer, but it's nothing like Omaha has to pay on top of taxes.
matpoulsen it may not bother you, but it is sure a bite to a lot people in this town.
I am sure folks are going to take that into consideration when wanting to buy house in Omaha. I also am hearing a lot of folks wanting to move out because of it. It's not the money so much as the on going construction hassles. It's going to be a mess.
