My husband has accepted a job in Omaha NE and will start the middle of April. So looks like we will be moving to Omaha NE. We currently live in a town called Girard Ohio outside of Youngstown Ohio. Neither one of us has ever been to Nebraska but we have lived in bigger cities (Las Vegas NV, Alb. NM, Houston TX). We have 3 children ages 4,5,6...2 of which are autistic and on IEP's. I really need some direction as I do not want my children to get lost in the school system and I am afraid that the OPS will be too large for my children who are on IEP's. We are letting our kids finish out the school year here at their current school and then start at their new school in Nebraska in the fall. What are the best areas for families with young kids? Best schools with special education programs? Neighborhoods? I know this is all subjective but this is all I have to go on and all input is welcome. Thanks in advance for any help. I am really looking forward to this exciting new chapter in our lives but I am so nervous at the same time.

I want to say either Bellevue or Westside has the best special education program... but I can't quite recall. I have a friend who is really good friends with an autistic kid who went to Westside and I think it went pretty well for him. Probably the best course of action would be to check out some schools with your kids when you get to Omaha.

All OPS Elementary Schools provide IEPs. There are over 600 special ed teachers, and over 300 special ed paras in the district. We all know that schools vary, regarding which personnel are the best with which special needs kids. Obviously we cannot help you too much with that, other than to say what you already know. You'll have to check individuals schools yourself.

Stay far far away from OPS schools, even their traditional education programs do not do well. Millard Public and Westside are the best around here for Autistic Children.

Ralston is worse than OPS. Fights, threats, and bullying are the norm rather than the exception. I'm not sure if Elkhorn has a special ed program, but they're a good school.

Hi! I was writing to see what you've found since you've moved! I actually moved from Niles, Ohio to Michigan and we are currently relocating again to Omaha-which is how I came across your post!
