Since COREL may not know what a couple of the previous comments were in reference to, I thought I would give some additional information
FOOTBRIDGE

PRO: Some folks love this bridge and think it really enhances the downtown riverfront and even provides some economic boost.
CON: Others think its an absolute waste of tax dollars because 1) it costs so much and 2) who's going to walk across it.
Here is a link to an article (broken link)that has an artists rendering of the footbridge. Here is a link to more photographs and renderings.

And Omaha has been taking the bait.

If you were not aware Omaha hosts the College World Series every year for like the last 50 years. Its a fantastic event for Omaha. The baseball stadium is next to the zoo in a primarily residential area. Every few years the city does some major upgrade to keep the NCAA tied to Omaha. Now the talk is no more upgrades, but build an entirely new stadium. The current thoughts are to move the stadium downtown where a lot of other redevelopment is occuring. That move will be expensive, but its also emotional - lots of folks like the old stadium and location, others like the new one in the new location - and others could just care less.
Here is a link to an article regarding it if interested.

My cousin from Pennsylvania, with a PhD, thought Omaha was the state. He and my DH had a very entertaining conversation about this one time as cuz asked DH "Where in Omaha are you from?". DH played along for some time, saying near UNO, etc, until cuz said "No, what city?" Then DH enlightened him.

Stargazer,
That was just uncalled for. First, my son is doing very well in school. Did I say he wasn't?? I said there is no accountability or feedback from the teacher or school...that doesn't mean he's doing poorly. He's doing great, but they move at a pathetically slow pace and have no connection to the children. As far as "resources", well big deal. I've seen far too many kids have plenty of resources and are still incapable of forming a complete sentence. You and I may not need to worry about the cracks in an education system, but all those student who "go to bed on an empty stomach" do need to worry about them.
For you to suggest that "I spend more time with my son" is nothing but an insult and a personal attack. I have been involved in education at the university level for the past decade. I'll guarantee no one takes education more seriously than I do.
I form my opinion based on a professional opinion. I have taught hundreds of kids at the University of Nebraska and I can directly compare the "metro" students and the "hillbilly" students. Sorry, but, in general, the small town kids simply are better grounded in the fundamentals. Again, I said, "in general." "In general" doesn't mean "every single instance." You do understand statistics, right?? Quit putting words in my mouth.
As far as your son's 36 ACT. Hmmm...big deal. He might be able to do physics, but there is certainly no guarantee. Do you think you're going to impress me with a 36 ACT...he he...please. You don't. I've had dinner with a Noble Prize winner who scored a 25...and I know someone who scored a 35 who is now working on a feedlot. You can insult me and my son and toot your son's horn all you want...it only makes you sound petty.
Furthermore, your son scored a 36...how many students in his class scored a 10?? Your son scoring a 36 does nothing to suggest the superiority of the MPS system. That is one score!! To compare the effectiveness of a school the only numbers that matter are the average and the standard deviation. The point of a "public education" is to educate the public...all the public...not just the one's who have good family environments.
Nevertheless, your Millard education system simply does not compare to my one room school house education. You may think that sounds ludicrous, but how many one room school houses have you visited?? The education my son is receiving is not even close to the one I received as a grade schooler. Yes, he gets plenty of work and teaching from home, but he essentially goes to school and does nothing. I strongly believe in parental accountability...but there must also be teacher accountability.
Again, this argument is produced whenever someone dare suggest a small town education is better than a metro education. Do you have any idea how many times, on this board, people have said a metro education is better than a small town education?! You have no problem with generalizations then...but boy the second someone else claims some superiority its an absolute outrage.
Well, you should go teach a few hundred college students, get intimate knowledge of small town school systems in Nebraska, and understand both the LPS and the Omaha Metro school systems and then we'll have a discussion about the superiority or inferiority of the Millard Public school system.

corel,
Have you been looking at the Omaha Metro area more or maybe even the Lincoln area? Either way stay in touch when you come to Nebraska. Maybe your husband might like to try some fishing in some of our lakes. I own a 17' boat and he is welcome to come along when I go fishing. Keep in mind that I will most likely head out into the western part of Nebraska that some folks would call the waste land, but I am sure that he will find this is not true. Right now we live southeast of Lincoln.
I fish for Walleye, Wipers, Northern Pike, White Bass. Most of the lakes also have carp as well if this is of interest to you as well. They all have different kinds of catfish as well.
Just keep this in mind as I do like to fish when I have the chance.

Bellevue was a wonderful city...
and could be again! I moved here in 1956 and we are thinking about staying. Excellent schools and the people are great. We just need to clean up the mess in city hall. To do that, we need to start over. Anywhere in Nebraska is just fine if you can feel the frenzy of GO BIG RED!!!!!!
