I'm a longtime Minneapolis resident, and due to a family wedding I've got 4 days to spend in Omaha this weekend!!! I've driven through once, but this will be the first time spending any time there.

Outside of the famous zoo which we will be visiting, what are your must do things while in town? My wife and I are 28 and 32, and we'll have our 3 year old son with us as well. I would say in general, we sku towards history/natural beauty/off the beaten path/diamond in the rough things or places, vs. your more touristy/kitschy types places. Thanks in advance, if you're ever in the Twin Cities I'd be happy to return the favor.

I'd definitely add the SAC Museum to your list of things to do. There's also a pretty decent children's museum downtown, and the whole Old Market area is fun to explore. You'd probably also enjoy the Durham Museum downtown; it's a local history museum that's pretty kid friendly.

awesome. One thing I'm confused about with the Old Market area. I'm gathering its a fairly big area, no? Is it fairly easy to navigate? Is there a certain part I should stick to?

Is this also the same area where I might find hipster specialty coffee shops and Indie restaurants? Thanks again for the info!

It's not a huge area; it's laid out in a grid pattern, and you can easily explore all of it on foot. And it's definitely the best place in town to find hipster sights and wonderful restaurants!

The Midtown Crossing area is another place to go for good food and interesting shops, as is the new Aksarben Village development.

Oh, and if you decide to check out the SAC Museum, you might also want to visit nearby the wildlife safari park (Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari - Omaha's Zoo). It just opened up for the season.

I live in the Old Market and have not yet seen a single hipster. I've seen lots of punks, scumbags, creepers, thugs, and homeless people yes. But never a hipster.

Benson has a lot of local restaurants and bars, not incredibly kid friendly though.

The pedestrian bridge is a good way to kill an hour on a nice afternoon. Always lots of families and joggers around makes for a nice stroll.

The Joslyn Art Museum has free admittance as well.

Head to Benson for locally owned hipster shops.

Be interested to find out if this man enjoyed his visit. I would have recommended the natural history museum in Lincoln. also.
