Statistics have shows that patrolling neighborhoods where violence occurs has no impact on the amount of violence in, or around, the neighborhood.
It's just a waste of police resources.

Actually....there is something known as the phantom effect. If there is a perceived police presence, criminal activity goes down. It may or may not be related to the actual number of police in an area.
So...while throwing more police at an area may seem like a good idea, it may not do anything. Yes, response times may increase if they have to come from another neighborhood to respond to a call, but police are rarely in a position to actually stop a crime from happening, as the average robbery, assault, whatever, only takes a minute or two.

It's called 'extra babysitters'. Change comes from the community not the babysitters.

South only has graffiti gangs, I go to North, and its not that bad. North may have gang problems and such, but since we are a magnet school, they offer better classes.

Does anyone know how bad this gang activity is? Is there a lot of violence associated with it? And most importantly, would you send your kids to either of these schools and still feel confident that they would be safe?
Thanks so much in advance for your opinions.

My daugher is a junior at Omaha North High School, and she has run into NO gang activity and/or trouble.
Omaha North High School is one of the best, and safest, schools in the Omaha metro area. And, unlike the Millard schools, there are not major drug deals going down, but hush-hushed by the media.

I would guess that the gang activity would be worse at North, because that is closer to the area that has the most gang violence.

Sorry my friend, but this is absolutely incorrect.

In fact, Omaha North was once considered to be one of the best public high schools in the country. The school offers a lot of classes that other schools don't. I was able to take Auto CAD for four years and at that time, I believe it was the only school in NE that offered four years worth of classes. I also worked on the newspaper and yearbook and they were both among the best in the state.
I would say to be leary of the neighborhoods but the're should be no reason to go into them especially if you're driving or taking the bus. My personal experience at the school was excellent and there isn't another school I would rather attend in the state. I don't know anything about Omaha South. Let me know if you have specific questions about North.

Well said. As the parent of a North High School student, I couldn't agree more!
