I went to North and had no problems with gangs or what have you. If you look for trouble you will find, but if you keep your nose clean people will leave you alone. They had an awesome math department there. At the time they had the only phd math teacher at the high school level in the state. this was the around 99 or so.

Millard is a good school district; my oldest graduated from there. We are now in the Gretna school district and I am extremely pleased with them. You may want to check out the Gretna area, really growing, and the teachers, administrators, etc. are all wonderful and the district has more than met our expectations since moving from the Millard area.

Yes. I am hearing similar things from people I talk to about it. I spoke with the head of the magnet program, and she said that lately, most of the physical fights have been confined to African-American female population. That was pretty surprising to me.

But she also said that they have students of all kinds there, even some with Asperger's Syndrome that still get along really well.

Thanks for your input.

I have many good friends that graduated from Omaha North who are great students who chose to go there while living west of 120th, and some who lived in the area. Their academics are absolutely great, math department great, computer department great, music program great, the list goes on. It also gives a more well-rounded education than anything in Millard simply due to diversity in all ways (not just race or economic status). There were fights, but if you weren't involved in them (which really requires being with the wrong group, said group does not try to pull you in unless you're looking for trouble), they were just spectacles every now and then. Nothing really gang related.

Well, that good to hear. Thanks so much!

i pulled my daughter out of King science and Tech. magnet to go to milard north for the IB program ang there is nothing wrong with the school but gas and she is very intelligent, we live in Millard and the drive is tooo much for us to much because she lived out of the district they wouldnt bus her. And she has gone through too much she was in the Thomas Hunters class(the, boy found in dundee) i got a phone call half way through the school day she was Balling, she had told us about him soo many times prior to the eventings, so she was doo depressed for like 2 weeks. and then their was the soocer field shooting, and i just didn't feel safe leaving her down there so that was that, But the Schhol has A planetarium and A nasa program so it was hard. On the otherhand Millard was great she originioally went their for elementary school, so i would deffinetly check out millard!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here is an web adresshttp://ops.org (broken link), or there isMillardPublicSchools.com | Millard Public Schools | Catholic High School Fundraising | Catholic Elementary School Fundraisers | Middle School, i am pretty sure the millard one is right

So I would say you should probobly live in the school district that your children go to, but if you like paying tons of money for gas then it doesnt matter where you live or your kids go to school

Don't feel like you have to shy away from OPS schools, either.

I graduated from Central High School in '07 and loved it. It's located just west of downtown. The education is great there, and it is considered one of the better schools in Omaha. It's also the largest high school in Nebraska, averaging about 2,300 - 2,500 students a year.

The school is very diverse. Any type of ethnicity or race you can think of and it can likely be found at Central. I couldn't imagine going to a school where this is not the case. Schools out west are superb, but they don't hold the diversity that some (Central) OPS schools have. I'm so thankful I attended a school that wasn't dominated by one specific race or ethnicity.

With this in mind, slight violence can be found at Central. However, this never got in the way of my education. I know that slight violence can easily scare someone away from a specific school, but this shouldn't be the case. I never walked around the school feeling scared or unsafe. I never felt that I was going to encounter violence, and I never did. Honestly, I can count the number of fights I saw at Central on one hand in my 4 years being there.

I know this probably wont help your decision any, but keep this in mind. I definitely wouldn't count out some OPS schools as an option.

I go to Westside and I think it is great. Most say westside has the best public schools in all of nebraska. but if you like to have days off... then reconsider. Westside starts early and ends later then most public schools around the state. Snow days are also hard to come by. one time we were the only school in the omaha area that was open. Omaha has some of the best schools in the nation, so whatever district you choose, you really can't go wrong.
