My family will be moving to Omaha in the next few months. With three children, the schools are our top concern. One of our children has a learning disability and needs a good Special Ed. program. Although she does not have severe disabilites, she requires therapy and has a lot of difficulty following directions in a mainstream classroom. Can anyone recommend a (public elementary) school that might be better suited to her needs than most?

I think most of the schools in the metro area will be good with Special Ed. I have a personal bias towards the Papillion/LaVista School District, primarily because I like Papillion as a place to live.

Since I think the schools are generally good let me ask: Do you have a preference on where you live: Urban, Suburban, or Rural enviorment?

OPS has done a phenomenal job with my kid, who is hearing impaired. I'm a Millard product, and always figured I'd want to put my kid in Millard...but I've been very pleased with OPS.

millard has a good program and when she gets to middle school, Beadle Middle school has a very good one.

It could vary school by school within each system. We were told a couple of days ago by an OPS teacher that we need to be in touch with the school my daughter will be attending next year, so we can check out the facilities. We are going to be visiting it next week.

Don't just assume that because it's Millard, or Papillion, or OPS, or whatever, that the local neighborhood school is good. Do a little checking.

Are your child's needs mostly behavioral or are they more academic?

The Omaha Public District has many schools within the system equipped to teach special needs children. One of the best is Oak Valley Elementary.at 3109 Pedersen Drive which is off 129th and West Center. School bus transportation is also provided. Beals Elementary near 50th and Center is another one you can check out.
