So I've read a few threads that have gone off the rails, and I'm wondering: I'm considering a move to Omaha and I don't need to live in an exclusively gay enclave, but I want to live in a neighborhood where I can be open about who I am, build a life in public, and show affection to my partner (and celebrate these things) without fearing for my safety. It's fine if these spaces don't exist in Omaha -- I'll just set my sights elsewhere -- but I want to know what I'm getting myself into (and where I should look) before I sign on the dotted line. Feel free to share thoughts that are on topic, and many thanks!

You'd be fine in any part of the city, really. The Benson and Midtown areas are probably where you will want to start looking.

Agreed, Midtown, Centeral Omaha would probably be optimal but I don't forsee you experiencing outright discrimination anywhere here. Blackstone is really cool, but but I also love Midtown Crossing, Gifford Park, Dundee, the list goes on.

Lots of respectably sized (mid to large) cities such as Omaha tend to be gay friendly. Especially if they are located in more conservative-leaning states. Many people from smaller towns who are gay, and don't end up in a large coastal city tend to go to these types of cities and form strong communities. For example, Atlanta, which is in a traditionally conservative state (though that may be changing, we'll see) has had a strong gay community for a very long time. Many people from the Bible Belt small towns of the southeast US have gravitated to Atlanta, and it has a remarkably strong community.
