I can see where there are some parts of town where you would want to be guarded and I understand that.

I was having dinner my signifigant other Monday night in the Old Market and the people around us barely noticed that two guys were having dinner together. He's fairly obvious too so it's not like we could hide it. On the walk home I gave him a hug outside of his building on the sidewalk with people walking by and no one seemed to care. I think it just depends where you're at. East, you're fine. West, it's iffy. I barely go out there so I don't know what it's like.

Default ...

Omahan's are majority liberal, most support casino's and gay marriage and such, more liberal in Dundee, DT, south Omaha and the further out west the more conservative and it peaks out in Elkhorn where logic kinda gets lost out there..

I live just south and west of the Omaha city limits, and nobody seems to care here either, the neighbors seem to not care and are very nice people, I still recommend DTO though, I plan on moving there not because of it being more liberal and stuff, but it is becoming a very very cool place

Actually, I don't have any problems with conservatives as I understand that the vast majority of them are not Rush Limbaugh or Michael Savage and really are good people.

I've heard the comments before about Rush or Savage. What exactly do you have a problem with them about? I don't listen to either on a regular basis and won't defend/criticize either one...but most of the time I find that people that speak bad of them really can't name a specific reason why they don't like 'em.

Is this thread dead? I found it a little late it seems. So what was the final decision ScranBarre ? Are you living in downtown Omaha now? If so, how do you like it?

My partner and I have lived together in midtown Omaha for 12 years. I've lived in Omaha most of my life and grew up in midtown. I've NEVER had a problem anywhere related to my sexuality. I've been out at every job I've had. I would say that both my partner and I land somewhere around 6 or 7 on the fem (1) to masc (10) scale, so some people pick up on it and others don't.

We're not overly affectionate, but we make no effort to hide while in public either. I'd be perfectly comfortable giving him a peck on the lips goodbye, for example, or putting my hand on his shoulder or otherwise showing restrained affection. I would never make out with him in public, but that's more a personal preference unrelated to my sexual orientation.

To tell you the truth, we've been stared out far more in places like LA, Chicago and San Francisco than we have here so I think Omahan's are either clueless, or they just don't really care...or maybe a little of both.

I'd say West is definitely more conservative, but I've never had any problems out there. Frankly, I don't give a damn if people in public don't like seeing a gay couple. If they don't want to see people who are different from them they shouldn't leave their houses.

I have another question for the downtown dwellers. My partner and I are in the baby-making process right now with the help of a surrogacy agency out in LA. As strange as it may sound to some, we'd love to move downtown. I'm wondering if anybody knows anyone raising kids down there and how they like it.

I know many people would think it odd to raise kids DT but we were always DT as kids and loved it. It doesn't matter what kind of dwelling you raise your kids in.

Default On a similar note...

I'm looking at attending graduate school at Creighton this fall. Are there any good areas between Creighton and downtown that are good for young professional grad students? That being safe but cheaper? Can you get around between Creighton and Downtown without a car, or should you bring one? Are there grocery stores and such necessities in the area?

And like the original poster, I'm a gay male. I only mention that as it's obviously nice to be in an area that is not only accepting but has enough of a gay population to have friends or date within the community. While I know Omaha is not L.A. (where I'm from), how would you describe the community within the Downtown to Midtown areas?

Thanks all.
