Default Moving north to Omaha and looking for a place

I've taken a teaching position with Westside District 66 in Omaha to begin next fall, and so I'm now in the market for a place to live. I'll be moving from Kansas (just graduated from Kansas State), so I'm not entirely familiar with Omaha or sure where are good places to search.

I'm single and looking for a one-bedroom apartment, preferably (given the price of gas) close to Westside High School. I'm a nontraditional student, so a bit older and quieter than a typical college grad, but I'm still able to live without huge amounts of space or stuff, and I'm looking for something not too awfully expensive (teacher salary + student loans = some budget constraint, but I don't have to be an ascetic either).

I've done a number of apartment searches online, but since I don't know Omaha well it's hard for me to figure out how close many of these apartments are to Westside, or what quality of neighborhood they're in. Many places' locations seem to be described by the neighborhood they're in, and I don't know what neighborhood(s) I should be searching.

I'm hoping to make a short trip up to Omaha soon to do some looking in person, and I'd like to arrange to see some places beforehand. Can anyone recommend some neighborhoods/places/contacts I should check out, or at least get me started on what I should be looking for in location descriptions?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Go to Craiglist and Type in "Aksarben" and see what kind of Apt. choices come up. The general area is between 72nd and 60th street and Center and Pacific. Nice area.

Also, anything you find within 2 miles of Westside School is going to be in a pretty nice neighborhood.

There are a lot of good choices for apartments along Pacific St between 72nd and about 84th.

Most of the things I've been looking at online are between $500 and $600 a month; I'm comfortable with that but wouldn't really want to go much more.

There are some decent apartments near pacific and 76th.

Also, if you go out to the 90th & Dodge area there are some apartments in that area and that would be very close and a nice part of town.

It may be a bit out of your budget, but up the road on Pacific street a couple miles from Westside (to the west a couple of miles) are Regency apartments and One Pacific Place apartments. Both of these would be very nice.

And there are some aprartments on the south side of Center around 93rd street that would be very close. This is in a good neighborhood as well.

Does the old Peony Park land have apartments? If so, this would be a decent area as well (78th & Cass).

All of the areas I'm describing are no more than 5 or 10 minutes to Westside.

Good luck, hope you enjoy Omaha!
