Funny, I had heretofore known that "gay" was a race.

I NEVER said it was a race! However, there is no reason they cannot include sexual orientation info. Such information would diversify the information already provided and give more accurate info about an area's demographics. Census information is used by a wide variety of individuals, businesses, and gov'ts. There is no reason they cannot include EVERYONE!!!

Why would they include sexual preference in a poll about the racial mix of any city? That would be stupid - just like all your "Look at me! I'm desperate for attention!!!!!!" posts about being gay.

Surf - I believe, in the 2000 census, they did collect some information on this subject. There was a place (checkbox or something similar) that asked if a household included unmarried partners. Of course, this metric applied to any non-spousal households, but the people who analyzed and produced results about the census did further break the unmarried partner totals down to identify households that included two adults of the same gender. From there, assumptions were made that these were gay households. In most locations, these totals did appear to be fairly low, though.

Most credible data is now showing that about 1%-2% of the general population is homosexual. That's a fairly small percentage.
Unfortunately, there are people who honestly seem to believe that 100% of 100% of all conversations are supposed to be about homosexuals.

Really? If I recall correctly, according to a study a few years back, there were 8.8 million gays lesbians and bisexuals, which was about 5% back then.

I really don't see WHY any government needs to know the racial makeup of a population. Aren't ALL races supposed to have equal rights? Why the need for a demographic breakdown?
Anytime I fill out any kind of legal document that asks for "Race" I do not fill it in. If it asks for "Sex" I just answer YES.

I for one would like to know how multi-cultural my area is. Businesses use Census data, too! Not just gov't entities!
