Bunch of packed up in the H2 and headed "downtown O" for some afternoon
Old Market people watching and Michael's Nachos.
As we were cruising around we noticed that there were no homeless folks hanging out in the usual places in the Gene Leahy Mall.

Someone in the H2 said he heard on TV or the radio that the road-warriors were all given movie tickets for matinee shows to get them off the streets while the duck races were going one. A ploy to hide them from the general public.

Anyone else heard about this?

If this is true, What do you think about doing things like this to hide a problem, rather than to fix a problem?

How do you fix the problem of the homeless? Many homeless have Chronic Mental Illness which inhibits them from working. So in short unless we want taxes to raise substantially - we better hand out some free movie tickets and make our city look a wee bit better!

You'd prefer to pile 'em into an H2 and take 'em somewhere else?

Sure I would! I could take them out to west "O" Village Point, and let them ruin that area just like they ruined the Gene Leahy Mall.

Give the folks in west "O" a taste of what it's like around DTO with the panhandling, drinking booze, sleeping in the grass and having the secretaries afraid of going down to Jimmy John's during their lunch without an escort.

I would love to take them somewhere else.

the people of west omaha wont ever have to deal with homeless. when money is present in a community the police make sure to keep homeless and violence out. when you really think about it - the folks of west omaha are the primary tax paying social class here in Omaha - and in a way they deserve to have a violence / homeless free place to live.

I Do NOT live in West Omaha ~

maybe there are no homeless in west O because there are no shelters there...and everything is so spread out.

That's exactly right. There are no shelters but more importantly, there are no bus systems out there. Many transients take the greyhounds around to different parts of the country and it drops them off downtown.

Also, the cops are more lenient because there are not alot of children who live in downtown proper, alot more single and childless couples who don't perceive the safety issue to be such a problem. If you had homeless people sleeping in a park in West O, people would feel their kids are in danger.

West O is huge. I would argue that the Old Market area's tax base is higher than many areas in West O. For that matter, add in Field Club and Dundee, Memorial Park, District 66. All of those tax bases are higher than alot of areas in West O.

I would still think between Barington Park and Linden Estates there is more money going to taxes then in all the places you mentioned ( singlely )
