My mom and I will soon be taking a road trip and we plan on spending a few days in the Omaha/Bellevue area. I want to find info about places we went when my dad was stationed at Offutt AFB from 1970-1974. I'm sure most of these places no longer exist, but we want to see where they would have been located. I have found where we lived, which was down the hill from Ft. Crook Elementary. My sister and I attended Ft. Crook, so we spent a lot of time in that neighborhood. I was able to google view the main road by our house(Capehart Rd.) where we spent many hours at the "rocket park." Across the street was a 7-11 and a beauty shop.

Are the 7-11 and beauty shop still there? If not, where were they, what are they now? Here is a list of other places we want to find. Keep in mind we are talking 1970-1974, and if there was more than one location, we would have probably gone to the one closest to Offutt AFB.

Skateland
Shakey's
Fish place on the river(or lake?) Charlie's?
Mexican restaurant(was maybe a firehouse previously)
Malls-Southroads, Westroads, Crossroads?
Aksarben
Country Kitchen
The stockyard-I know we drove by this to get to some of these places

These places were maybe near my junior high, Logan:
Goodrich for malts
Grocery store that sold monkey bread
Bellevue College
The Roxy Theater-It is now Bellevue Little Theater(I was able to view this)-What are the cross streets?

I'm trying to get my bearings, because I will be driving.

Thanks for any and all help! Omaha and San Antonio were two of our favorite places we lived as kids. But, we didn't have to shovel the snow, we only played in it.

  • Skateland is still there on 84th & F (between L street and I-80)
  • Shakeys - man that brings back memories... was the best place but been gone for many many years (at least a couple decades)
  • Fish is either Joe Tess's on South 24th in South Omaha or the fish place on the back side of the base along the river - both are still there and its the one on the back side of the base that I prefer - fantastic Walleye
  • Malls: Southroads is dead; Crossroads is still there but dying; Westroads is still there and is vibrant (fyi...if in the area and you need a mall go to Papillion's Shadow Lake on 72nd & Hwy 370)
  • AkSarBen as you knew it is gone - knocked down a number of years ago; however, just as a point of interest you will still want to drive over there and see what it turned into - nothing like the old days of horse racing, but is revitalizing the area with a new mixed use development
  • Stockyards were tore down - the tall brick building is still there (turned into condo's), but the area redeveloped.
  • The Goodrich you knew is gone - most free standing ones are gone - there are a few that have come back in conjunction with Subway sandwich stores.
  • Bellevue College is still there are really grown.
  • The Old Roxy Theatre is in the 200 block of W Mission or intersection of Jefferson & W Mission - fyi.. W Mission is also Hwy370.

Assuming you dad was part of SAC while at Offutt, you might be interested in the SAC Museum. It used to actually be housed on the base, but a number of years ago it was moved and expanded - its a real high class operation.

Its no longer by the base, its actually on I-80 by the Platte River... (from Bellevue go west on Hwy 370 through Papillion and onto I-80.. take I-80 West -towards Lincoln- and then take the Mahoney Exit).

Thanks Dave! What is the name of the fish place on the back of the base? Where was my Goodrich, what's there now?
