relocating to Omaha
Hello to everyone,
Thanks to all for the useful information posted in this forum. I'll be relocating to Omaha in the month of March-07 for employment purpose.
I am looking forward to following information with regards to my relocation - Which part of the city is better suited for family with kids. Specifically in close proximity of groceries shopping, parks (playing area), library and good public pre-school.
Hoping for a quick response.

I am not an expert
like stargazer or dtoluv, however, I am aware of general areas and good with statistical information.
Most of Omaha is actually low-crime and good for education, I do not have the facts of what schools exactly are the best, except for Westside and Millard public schools which are generally in the Southwest side of Omaha...
The further west you go the newer the city. Just south of Omaha is Bellevue, Ralston, Papillion and La Vista... I believe that each community has at least a good school system and all the cities besides Ralston are 50%+ new within the last 10-15 years... There are other communities in the area that are fairly close to the city, but are seperated by some land if that is your choice.. There WAS Elkhorn, but that city is being annexed and will be a part of Omaha by the end of this or next week, even though there is a little bit of a continuity between the communities, there still is some green in between, there is also Bennington which is about 1.5 miles NW of the outskirts of Omaha, there is Gretna which is probably about 5-6 miles SW of the Millard district of Omaha which is the southwest of the SW corner of the city. There is also Springfield, but for some reason I remember someone warning people to stay away from that community, I am not really sure why, maybe Stargazer or DTO would know. There's Waterloo which is about 2 miles west of Elkhorn, it is growing some because Omaha is approaching it and it will accelerate as time goes on, but its still a town of less than a 1,000 people. Three miles west of Waterloo is Valley which is a town of about 1700-1900 people (too lazy to go to census.gov :-)) it is growing slowly, but it definetely is a good community with almost a fully seperate identity, then there is Fremont which is 36 miles from downtown Omaha or about 18 miles from Elkhorn, it is a sizeable community connected with a freeway that has no streetlights or stop signs from its eastern size all the way to downtown Omaha!! It has just over 25,000 people and has all the amendities you would need plus more for daily life and some recreation, but the good thing about Fremont is that it is so close to Omaha that more and more are driving there for work and it's alot cheaper to live there than in Omaha, despite the very low cost-of-living anyway in Omaha, plus there is a bunch of lakes just to the west of it that you can boat, swim, camp etc... To work in Omaha and live outside of the city, Fremont is about as far west as you would like to go, I would also draw the line to Wahoo which is a town of about 4,000 14 miles straight south of Fremont and probably about 14-15 miles to the very western edge of Omaha. Ashland would be a decent destination to live if you have an interest to explore Lincoln as well as it lies almost directly in between Omaha and lincoln and is less than a 20 minute drive to the edge of either city. Ashland has just over 2,000 residents and is slowly growing, however there are alot of attractions in and near the city including mahoney state park, linoma, a very popular golf-course, SAC airfield museum, some animal drive through park and other attractions as well. Ashland is becoming a community that alot of eyes are drawn too for possible future building of not just jobs or housing, but draws probably the most interest for future attraction building outside of downtown Omaha... There is a possibility of a big-time amusement park/resort building there and the info is at www.portnebraska.com... Lincoln has a few things that is worth exploring as it is a booming metropolitan area very near Ashland and Omaha that is approaching 300,000 in the metro and approaching 250,000 in the city. The world class Huskers is in Lincoln :-)... Just a note... yes the taxes are lower on the Iowa side of the metro, however there is a reason that the population of that side of the river has been rising only very slowly for many decades....
To answer your question about the best place for shopping or dining india... Omaha is in a transitional period right now where the city is reinventing itself and all over the city there are very good places to dine and shop, to get distinct information such as low-high class information that would be more of an area for dto and stargazer, however I will say that Omaha is the type of city that the food is generally very good even in the lower class areas, and also Omaha has an interesting mix of low-upper class dining and shopping all accross the metro mixed in. High class can be seen in the Regency area of Omaha, downtown Omaha and to be honest, I am sure there is more but lets have dto and stargazer answer the rest....
Any questions??

Pretty much anywhere in Omaha is going to be fine. I would suggest living in the city and not for out where the traffic is slower. Neighborhoods in the city that would be worth looking into are Dundee, Benson, Florence and Midtown.
In case you're a practicing Hindu Omaha actually has a new, large hindu temple around 132nd and Center. I know star-gazer might have a pic of it somewhere.

Coming from India... are you Hindu by any chance ?
If so, you may (or may not... I don't know... I'm not particularly religious myself) be interested to know that there is a beautiful Hindu temple located in west Omaha in the area of 132nd and West Center. There's also an Indian grocery store immediately across the street from it. I'm in the IT field, and subsequently work with ALOT of H1 visa folks from India... there's even a cricket league which plays when the weather permits.
All that said... I suppose you'll end up being an American of European descent, who is just relocating back to the US from a stint overseas.

I am an Indian and Hindu
Thanks for all your replies.
DTO_Luv & Star_gazer - I am an Indian and practice Hindu religion. I am very excited to know about the Hindu Temple in Omaha. As for every Indian, I also love and play cricket.
This is going to be my first visit to US and I am looking forward to the same.
Your inputs are very valuable - please do share more info in this regard. If possible could you please suggest name of the good estate agencies dealing in rented accommodation?
Looking forward to a wonderful stay in Omaha!
Regards
Indian2Omaha!

Welcome to Omaha!! I'm a native Texan who moved here 13 years ago for college and am still here....It's a great place to raise a family and is a great size city. Not too big (Houston was just way way too large for my taste anymore) and not too small.
I live in Elkhorn which is just west and has excellent schools. My son has a disability and has had no problems being included with his peers.
Unfortunately, my husband and I will be relocating out of Omaha (he is a native Nebraskan) to Oregon for his job. Although I'm excited about that area, I'm nervous about finding such an incredible school system.
Good luck to you! Maybe you'll end up out this direction and maybe even in my home!
