I, for one, am enjoying the fact that gas is back down to under $1.75 per gallon locally.

Unfortunately, that inevitably has people far less concerned about conservation, public transportation and economical transportation.

According to wikipedia, Omaha's average population Density is 3,371 people per square mile, and here is a population density map of Nebraska (couldn't find one of just Omaha.)

Plus a better mass transit system could really help people who can't afford to drive all the way to Lincoln and want to go to a Nebraska Football game or something. It might also attract even more people here because we have good mass transit.

I agree. Mostly.

But I would say that people who cannot afford to drive to Lincoln probably can't afford to go to a Huskers football game either. Or at least they shouldn't.

HAHA, tell that to some husker fans. I bet some parents would sell their children on e-bay just to buy tickets.

Actually, there is a semi-well know fact that GM used a subsidiary company in the 1940's-60's to buy up all of the United State's streetcar lines.

They then scaled down the service so that people would have to rely on cars and buses.

But, in addition to that, they owned the bus lines (with Goodyear Tire) and made those more inefficient so that people would have to rely completely on their automobiles.

So, as we reflect on this bailout, maybe we should be thinking about how GM already screwed the American consumer and should actually be paying for the reinstallation of those streetcar lines across the country.

A great movie on the subject is called "Taken for a Ride"
