Good for your friend. I'm out at my job to and my bosses don't treat me any differently. I don't think you're going to find anyone that is going to willfully fire someone for being gay. Hello lawsuit. I do know in the case of the person at my job it was not a secret that the manager in question did treat the employee bad enough that he quit. No he may not have been fired but he didn't feel comfortable enough to work there anymore.

Yes people treating you badly for being gay when they didn't before they knew you were gay is discrimination.

Don't argue with me about this protests attendance. I did not hype it up. It is what it is. The issue was at least important to the people that showed up and that's all that matters. You may have some misguided feelings towards a certain poster here and that isn't me so don't minimize what other people did to show how they feel about an issue.

Why are you getting hostile about this?

You're "out" at work, and it isn't a problem. Your friend quitting is a very subjective issue. He/she may have been an unsatisfactory employee. You know as well as I do that a boss cannot fire somebody for being gay. As you yourself said, "Hello lawsuit."

And I'm not arguing about the attendance at that protest. My point is that apparently this whole issue of gay rights isn't that big a deal.

It absolutely is a big deal. People in this country are legally being treated as 2nd class citizens and it's going to take awhile for them to be equal in the eyes of the law. You're equating 1 groups protest as being the only group of people that care. That's not true. I used to see 1 guy in the Old Market regularly preaching and telling people about Jesus. Should I assume he's the only christian or follower of Jesus out there? Absolutely not. Nor should you assume that the people at the protest were the only ones that care about gay rights when that is clearly not true.

Well, apparently the vast majority of homosexuals in Omaha don't think so - as evidenced by their absence.

I have to wonder of most were simply off living their lives, doing their thing.

Absence isn't the void of caring.

I'm all for an argument but make a good argument. I'm sure most gay people in Omaha and every other city around the country with the same protest had disproportionate amounts of there gay population represented whether it was Omaha, NYC, or San Francisco...well maybe not San Francisco.

The obvious absence of the overwhelming majority of Omaha's homosexuals - at this "protest" - shows me that the overwhelming majority of Omaha's homosexuals don't feel there are issues worth protesting.

I've got a good friend, a homosexual, who is a school teacher in a local junior high. His orientation is not a mystery to anybody. He is not harassed at work, and has not been fired. I also know that he was not at this protest, because it's not that big of a deal. He's just busy living his life.
And I suppose you believe that racism and sexism also do not exist in Omaha since there is no large event to protest them? You must be a straight white man then...in other words one for whom the system functions perfectly fine.

I would argue that the most important step in confronting and stopping any kind of discrimination is to be able to see it..admit it exists...only then you can address it.

It exists Filet Mignon. Whether or not you believe. Can we move on to the next topic now?

I'm sure he knows it exists, most of us do. But, those that disagree with your opinion aren't Bigots, or atleast not all of them are. True Bigotry is something much darker and eviler, I've seen it before when SurfOmaha made his first Gay thread and a certain member came on and called gays mutants and freaks, That is bigotry. Also Stacy, you have seen Bigotry at least once to, when you first arrived here. The post you made about that truly made my blood boil with sheer rage, things like that are bigotry, not if people peacefuly and civily disagree with you. And of course theres also Westboro Church, which I think is the eviliest and most disgusting church ever. I think they're an embarassment to all of Christianity.

So you're saying you hate straight white men? Honestly, it sounds like you have a huge chip on your shoulder.

Obviously this is a topic that some people aren't able to talk about, without getting all upset and angry. That's unfortunate.

I think you hit on an important point.

Some people are fully convinced that they themselves are not and cannot be prejudiced in any way, and that everybody who might happens to disagree with their views are hatemongers. And that simply is not the case.

No, that is not what I am saying at all...nor am I upset and angry. What I am saying is it is difficult for folks to truly see problems in a system that works perfectly well for them. It is really hard for white people to acknowledge racism (or that they themselves might be racist) because they are less likely to have been victims of it, for example. Ditto men to take sexism seriously...and unfortunately ditto straight people to see the persistence of anti-gay prejudice.

But the problems are there regardless.

That's all I'm saying.
