apartments in omaha
Hey everyone!! I will be coming to Omaha from Virginia via North and South Carolinas as a travel RN and am looking for an apartment. The things that are most important to me are SAFETY, close shopping and close to Nebraske Medical Center. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I have looked at Steeplechase, Overlook, Pavilion at Twin Creek, Regency Lakeside and Apple Creek, are any of these good, or does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks! See you in January.

Take a look at Harrison Hills. I don't live in an apt, but based on several discussions on this forum over the summer this one was mentioned several times as highly rated.
Here is one of the threads: http://www.city-data.com/forum/omaha/276580-i-love-here.html
Harrison Hills.

I don't think those apartments are all that close to UNMC.... isn't that midtown?

LaVista... but you mentioned TwinCreek which is even further south in Sarpy County, so thought it might meet the criteria.

Steeplechase is BAD news and I have never heard any different.
It may look nice from the road but its anything but. I would hate for your first experience in Omaha to have to deal with them unproffesional half-wits who work in the leasing office.

The Med Center's campus is midtown, near 40th and Dodge. I don't know much about the apartments you were looking at, but Regency is definitely in the wrong direction. If you want to stay close to the hospital, check out the Mutual/Gold Coast neighborhood. There are tons of rentals and apartments in this area due to its location between the Med Center and Creighton University. I live in the area and always feel fairly safe. Plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance, and fairly close to downtown. Most grocery stores and other shopping require a short drive or a bus ride, but Omaha is not a walkable city in general, so this is the case in almost every neighborhood. The neighborhood is full of students, so rent is cheap! Good luck!

I also live right by the Med Center and I really like this neighborhood too. Rents here are certainly affordable, so why confine yourself to an apartment? There are some great houses for rent too. I would keep an eye on craigslist, but confine the search to west of say 34th (a rather random designation, but it starts to get sporadically sketchy east of there depending on where you are North/South).

Carhenge & Stacy are definitely on the right track. UNMC is in what's called the Midtown Area, and there are a LOT of apartments in that area. You may even want to look a little closer to downtown Omaha. It's not that far (UNMC is on 42nd Street - only about 25 blocks from downtown).

I recommend Brentwood Park Apartments in La Vista. It's real close to the interstate so you can take it to get to the Medical Center (or relatively nearby). It is an extremely safe area (108th and Giles) and there's a new open air shopping center that opened called Shadow Lake which is within 15 minutes. It includes Best Buy, Old Navy, World Market, Borders and restaraunts like Old Chicago and Texas Roadhouse. Let me know if you would like more info.
