Is the Florence area a good place to raise kids?
 Hello,
My family relocated to the Omaha area from Wisconsin in October 2008. We have been renting however plan to buy a home and close in mid-May to early June. I've done some searching here and have found lots of really useful information regarding school districts and neighborhoods in and around Omaha. It is such a great resource!!!
There was 1 post that briefly mentioned a NE section of the city called Florence as being a "cool" area and it intrigued me enough to take a look at homes for sale. The prices are so incredibly reasonable that it makes me wonder what I DON'T know about the area. We have 3 boys who are grade school age. Is it a good area to raise kids? I'd really appreciate any information or insight that you could share with me.
Cheers, Paula

It's pretty hit or miss. Overall, I would not choose the neighborhood for my family.

My wife grew up there, and I've known several other folks from the area. But it's not as good as it was when my in-laws built their house there 30 years ago.

It's a nice area and one of the neighborhoods in Omaha that has it's old downtown area still in tact.

florence itself is ok but if you plan on driving a couple blocks away you are in the heart of north omaha witch is the worst part of omaha. you will be very close to gangs and probably hear gun shots like my sister in law does on a regular basis. if you come to omaha i would stay as far west as possible its more expensive but much safer. there are tons of small towns just outside of west omaha that are great and have good schools and very safe.

I lived on 41st and Ames for quite a few years and we never had any trouble there outside of some petty vandalism one year.
There is hardly nothing unsafe about east Omaha, provided you are alert, cautious and avoid the well known bad area (which is small)...basically just use common sense.

Actually, that's not true.
Yes, the very SOUTH EAST part of Florence abuts dreaded "North O", but that's just a small portion of Florence.
Have you ever been in any of the neighborhoods around the Forest Lawn Cemetery? They're incredible!
On the other hand, people who are afraid to live East of 72nd Street make real estate in that area a GREAT buy!

You're dead on.
EVERY time I hear about a shooting in "North O", before the details come out, I can tell you what neighborhood it was in, what time of the night it was, and who was involved.
The answer? Don't hang around 26th & Sprague at 4:00 AM with all the Gangbangers.

That may be true, but a young kid isn't always alert, cautious and as they grow up they sometimes don't avoid bad areas.
