I will be moving to Omaha in June, and after reading all the posts here I have to say Im excited.... Can anyone tell me if there is much of a differance between Columbus ohio and Omaha. We are very Cultural here with lots of differant races. I have lived here my whole live and never thought I would leave. I have 3 kids and just wonder if they will fit in and feel comfortable right away. We bought a house in North west Omaha from a builder named Hearthstone homes, and compared to the cost of a new house here, we got our 4 bedroom 2 1/2 bath for 159,000. Here it would of been 200,000 or a little more. We are on North 108th Street. Is this a good area? Anything around it yet, I havent seen it yet, but I will be flying out in April.
Thanks on any info you can give. I think the High School is Northwest High School. |

I lived in Columbus, Ohio from 2002 to 2003 so I know about Columbus.
As far as from a cultural perspective Omaha will offer slightly more then the average metro of 850,000 people, but its certainly not Columbus in that regard. Omaha has a fairly good art museum, one of the top performing arts centers and also it has one of the largest community performing arts centers in the nation. North 108th is a very good area of town, its fairly new out there. The area has lots of families, is close to retail amenities they have a mall around 102nd and Dodge and another retail corridor off 132nd and Maple. Anything, west of 72nd street is fairly well-kept. I would say North 108th would be similar to Gahanna or the newer portions of Reynoldsburg. North-West overall feels like a mix of Pickerington, newer-areas of Reynoldsburg and Gahanna. The main thing is the property taxes have a higher rate then Columbus, they do not have a municipal income tax here though. The sales taxes are higher. So overall, tax wise its about the same as Columbus is. They are both high-tax states. Omaha overall is not nearly as clean as Columbus. But North 108th is in NW Omaha which is one of the best kept areas of the city and it is very modern there. Omaha is hilly in-between Columbus and Cincinnati on being hilly. The traffic in Omaha is much less then it is in Columbus thanks to a good interstate system. They tend not to have the back-ups in the morning like they do on I-70 in Columbus. The drivers tend to be faster in Omaha then Columbus mainly because the amount of traffic seems to be much less on Omaha road-ways then Columbus. The summers will be hotter then Columbus. Many more days in the 90s here then there. The winters will have lower temperatures, about the same amount of snow but the cold will not be as humid. The rainfall amounts are much less here and when it rains it doesnt rain nearly as much. Municipal services such as snow removal are not as good in Omaha as Columbus and overall its not as well-kept of a city overall. But still better then some. Its certainly overall as a whole not nearly as clean of a city as Columbus but very few cities are. Last edited by MattDen; 03-18-2007 at 01:34 AM. |

I think you'll find everything Columbus has in Omaha. Omaha too, has many different races and all types of people. South Omaha is predominantly Hispanic and the proud traditions are reflected in the area. Omaha also has the largest Sudanese population of any US city.
Anything more specific you'd like to know about Omaha just ask. |

Take a look at the photographs that DTO Luv has posted about downtown Omaha, they are great.
You can also go to this web link that has many pictures of not just Nebraska, but of other areas of America and parts of the world. Surf this to also get a feel for the weather that we have here. You will find that it is not that much different than what you have in Ohio. http://www.hprcc.unl.edu/nebraska/ |

You will LOVE IT HERE!!!
To add to what is already here.. The Qwest Center in OMaha gets the top concerts and was the #8 in the world for concert ticket sales.. Being from Ohio you probably won't be much of a Husker fan, lol, but the Huskers are a 45 minute drive on I-80 to the southwest. We have a fantastic playhouse, a world-class zoo, many NCAA tournament events year after year, a really good underground music scene... Blues and Jazz clubs... the performing arts center is brand new and the building is awesome!! There is so much to do here, there are camping grounds nearby, you can go white-water rafting on the Niobrara river a couple of hours to the north... Like DTO said, anything you would like to know, just ask... |

Being that this is the Cornhusker state, there will be alot of football leagues here, and he could probably play in different leagues all year round, lol..
According to my research, Northwest Highschool is above average for academics and near superior in the math category and is a class A school, which is the largest class, however in your area is another school district you can opt to and that is Elkhorn High, and that school EXCELS at every category imaginable and is ranked just ridiculously high in all categories and maybe the best high school in the nation in academics, lol, however it is a class B school soon to turn class A. Even though Elkhorn is a class B school, it has been reckognized as a football machine school, producing top-notch division 1 players that make it to the NFL... Here is the Omaha highschool lacrosse website (not all highschools participate) http://www.omahalax.com/ OMaha midget football team: http://incolor.inebraska.com/stormch...%20Chiefs.html Website to the OMaha youth sports including pee wee football http://kwaa.org/football/default.aspx I'm going to find a Nebraskan's for Ohio St sports bar for you guys to watch Ohio St games that are not on regular cable tv... Get used to the Huskers though, there's alot of people that like them here and there is alot of people that don't like them here, it's a love-hate thing here, lol |

You better be careful! You will encounter everything from good-natured ribbing to absolute scorn and riducule for supporting a team other than the Huskers. From personal experience.
