Actually, that would be incorrect, Christianity says we are all children of God, and we are all loved by him equally just as we are. I say its just people being people, flawed and stupid, that made those laws in the 50's and the ones we have now.

That is not incorrect!!! Bigots and right-wing nuts alike used the bible and religion to dictate the outlawing of interracial marriage! Just like they use it to ban gay marriage today!

And you are now also claiming that we should have a special class of marriage for people based on sexual preference. We're not the bigots.

Currently, men cannot marry men. Women cannot marry women. Sexual preference is irrelevant. Nobody is denying anyone rights--gay people have the same rights as I do. To allow a special form of marriage for gay people would not be appropriate.
|
Sexual preference is at the very heart of the matter my dear, that's why its banned. You don't even get it! You don't even understand the issue. Your side has already lost, the younger generations don't even care if if two men or two women marry!

Yes they used it, but they used it incorrectly and they still do to, unfortunately.

Kdrich,
You're like talking to a brick wall.
Again! How does gay marriage devalue heterosexual marriage? You still haven't answered that question.
Marriage has evolved since the beginning of time! To base your reasoning essentially on "its traditional" is childish.
You keep saying they have the same rights! Under YOUR definition of what the right is!! If you define the right as "being able to marry the person of your choosing" then they DO NOT have the same right! Why is that hard to understand?? The point is it is up to a COURT to determine whether the marriage statutes are just. If they are not then the court may overturn the law. But it is then up to the state to pass or NOT pass a constitutional amendment. You act as though the court just takes democracy out of the equation...that's simply not true.
One can debate the question but your reasoning has nearly zero merit and barely even touches on the actual issue. You're simply being indignant. The whole point is we must determine "what" right the right to marriage entails! That isn't a simple question and its not something that can be resolved by simply holding up the tradition flag and saying that's how its always been.

Well, whether they used it incorrectly or not is not the point, the point is they DID IT! And they continue to do it to the gay community!

Did I specifically say it "devalues" it in this argument? It changes the definition of it. I question the wisdom of changing the definition of marriage to suit the wishes of a small minority.
As for marrying the "person of their choice"? Nobody has that right today--gay or straight. What makes you think you deserve that right (or anyone else)?

People have never been questioned on sexual preference before. It's never been asked.
You are in favor of creating a form of marriage that only a small minority of people will enter into.

Wouldn't you say hetero sexual marriage is also a special class of Marriage for, well, hetero sexuals? Gay people couldn't get a marriage with the opposite sex, so yay for you, you have something they don't and they have something you don't, drinks, confetti and cake for everyone, its a party!
