Suprisingly, Lincoln had the highest violent crime rate in the state in 2005. Omaha was actually 2nd.

Basically, When Ive looked it up Nebraska is in the middle on overall crime rates. Omaha though has actually a very low violent crime rate though compared to other midwestern cities size but thats mainly because its annexed so much more then other midwestern cities. Alot of midwestern cities in particular have not annexed recently and are still confined to pretty much the city limits from many decades ago unlike Omaha which has continually annexed areas, mainly affluent areas for many years.

Whats suprising is compared to North Platte and Scottsbluff, Omaha actually has a much lower overall crime rate.

The rates in Nebraska really are not because of Omaha, which is sort of unlike alot of the midwest. Most midwestern states tend to have very high overall crime rates in the largest city and then its much, much lower in other areas of the state not so with Nebraska.

Exclamation Corporate “welfare” crime unreported!

Crime stats are interesting; they take into account the number of crimes with the population. And one thing that I’ve noticed is that I’ve never been able to find out just what part of society is affected more then another. I never had a break in, robbery, or been involved in a violent crime. I am thankful for this. However I don’t put myself or my family in harms way. Think of it this way, I don’t park my car in areas that it would be left unattended and stolen. I don’t spend my nights at bars drinking in neighborhoods that are ripe for being mugged. I don’t buy and live in a home that is in an area where there is a large amount of blight, crime, and poverty. I can’t help be feel that the highest percentage of crime happens to those people who are in poverty and low income areas.

Find the target areas of crime and you’ll see that the areas are not in the best of neighborhoods. These are people who are typically in low income, low education, and no future situations. Many are criminals out of jail with nowhere to go and nothing good happening in their lives. Criminals feed on the weak and stupid if you distance yourself from them, the crime rate goes down.

Omaha is not unlike any other large city. There are neighborhoods that you don’t want to live in, there are bars and nightclubs that you don’t want to spend time in, there are parking lots that you know you shouldn’t leave your car unattended. All cities have these areas, so don’t paint a bad picture of Omaha with the crime.

All that being said ~ if you don’t like the crime move to the bible belt and have your fellow church members rip off the government in tax evasion and fraud, and those who are business leaders in the community who take advantage of skimming off company money for themselves and family. Those who have marital affairs that go unreported and unknown. Yeah ,,,,, they are the pillars of our communities, they just didn’t get caught yet, and no crime records show them on the list. It’s always interesting what goes on behind closed doors in the smaller communities where society seems to “look good” in the stats.

Well, good for you for having the foresight to park your car in the right places. My brother-in-law had a car stolen from downtown Omaha back when he was in high school in the 60s. He was attending a school function. You shouldn't be so smug. Bad stuff happens.

Lightbulb poverty & crime hand in hand

Sorry if you thought I was smug. Yes bad things can happen that you may have little or no control over what your doing. However my point was that if your aware of what you’re doing and where you’re at, you’d seldom have any trouble.

Smug no ~ logical yes. I’m not in poverty but I’m far from the other end of wealthy. I avoid what looks like something that could cause problems and over the years it has paid off. Yes I have had a couple of minor issues but nothing like some people. Not everyone has a choice of where they live and work, but if you can make the best of something then do so. Be logical don’t be a victim!

My point is:
Look at the crime stats at any police department of a city and you’ll find that the majority of the crime happens in areas of poverty. That’s not my fault or yours; these people are victims of their neighborhoods and life styles. Should it be cleaned up ~ yes. No one should have to live in crime ridden areas of poverty. I also point out in my other post that the crime occurs in some of the best areas of the city as well. Those are the crimes of tax fraud, corporate crimes, legal drug use etc. that never get reported or caught. So there is crime elsewhere it just doesn’t get reported or caught.

The stats reflect the crime in poverty areas of a city, the larger the poverty area the more people who are affected the higher the numbers in the stats. So when you’re looking at the numbers per 1,000 it doesn’t reflect the city accurately and that’s my point.

It would be interesting to see the population totals with relationship of “poverty” per 1,000 and the “crime” stats per 1,000.
