teaching in omaha
I am a sped teacher looking at relocating to Omaha...DH would be taking a job at Offut (civilian though). I have looked through Omaha's school district website and I don't see any teaching positions. Are you on a hiring freeze? Are sped teachers needed? Where can I find the pay scale? I have my Bachelors in History, a Masters in SPED, and Masters in Curriculum & Instruction...so even if someone can give me a ballpark figure.
Thanks!
Lynette

Okay, I am searching those areas too. I still can't find salary schedules though.

teaching jobs
You have a solid resume. I'd suggest visiting the various school districts' headquarters. If the job market in your field currently seems tight in the Omaha area, you might want to offer your services as a substitute teacher until a job becomes available. Subs make pretty good money, and they'll know that you're seriously interested in a position. It would put you in a good position for a job down the road.

Many districts have already filled the majority of next year's positions, but a few will pop up here and there. My friend is in the HR department of a district there and she has heard of a few jobs that aren't currently posted that will likely become open, but who knows if that stuff will absolutely materialize. If you are pretty definite about relocating, it doesn't hurt to get started on completing the app for each district online as well as begin the certification process (you need a certificate even if you will just be subbing).
Teacher pay in public schools is usually around the low 30s. I have included links to the Ralston and Westside salary schedules. When I lived in Omaha, Westside usually paid a bit higher than the other districts, but I'm not sure if that is still the case. Ralston Salary Schedule 2008-2009
Westside/District 66 Salary Info You could also consider private schools, but the salary is usually lower and some private schools don't have SpEd teachers.
You might also want to keep an eye on the education section of Careerlink as many districts do post openings there as do other employers that have education-related positions (for example, many of the call centers are frequently in need of trainers). Careerlink Education page
Good luck!

I moved here a year ago and found while looking for a teaching job that Omaha is rather a closed system in this respect. From what I have heard jobs tend to go to inner circle people, so the advise to begin subbing is good...gets your foot in the door and gives you name and face recognition. There is a sub-credential requirement (which I never got because I knew I would only be here one year). Its pretty basic with the exception that you have to prove you have taken a class in multicultural ed (although they call it something else).

I am not seeing any sped jobs, surprising because usually sped is usually such in demand. I don't really understand the salary schedules either. I am used to finding where I am by using Masters+36 with 3 years experience. Here in CO, I am at 40,100K
